A gravel road cyclosportive in the tradition of Italy's L'Eroica sportive The Cirque Cyclosportive takes place Saturday, May 18, 2013. More info.
We have revised courses of 60 and 30 miles and an earlier date for 2013. Designed to celebrate the history of cycling, and taking place on a course that is 50/50 pavement and gravel roads, you don't need a vintage bike to participate in or enjoy the Cirque Cyclosportive. 2015 UPDATE: The Cirque du Cyclisme show and Cirque Cyclosportive are no more, but we're introducing a new event called the American Century of Bikes and Brews, and many of the same people are behind it. The new event features gravel road rides, a concours d'elegance, grass track races, and yes, good American craft beer at the Loudoun County Fairgrounds in Leesburg, VA August 29-30. We'll be launching a new page for this event shortly, and will post the link here. In the meantime, check out our website at www.artisancyclefest.com

Will anyone show up on a classic Benotto, like the one being prepped by the Sanson team mechanic at the start of the 1976 classic film "A Sunday in Hell"? The team of Francesco Moser and Danish star Ole Ritter rode these bikes. A few years later, so did 1984 Olympian Rebecca Twigg.
Velo Classique in Purcellville still sells the iconic Benotto "cellotape". Back in the mid/late 1980s, Mel Pinto's shop sold rolls for 89 cents each and you could afford to change it out every week in different colors (which I did often!).

Although you don't need to ride on a vintage bike to participate in the sportive, we will be giving out a special prize for the best vintage bike ridden in the event. We'll be handing out our "Sportive Awards" and certificates for all who participated in the ride back at the Best Western Leesburg (home of the Cirque du Cyclisme show) beginning at 7 PM. Coffee and desserts will be served!
