Let's talk about that morning cup of coffee.
Coffee is high in antioxidants, which may contribute to the mild beneficial effect seen in small population studies showing a link between coffee consumption and a lower incidence of cognitive decline. While these preliminary studies are far from conclusive, we do know that for most people coffee can be a great part of a balanced diet. Just don't add a bunch of sweeteners!
However, you should probably skip the coffee if:
You are sensitive to caffeine
You are prone to headaches and/or migraines
You have high cortisol or adrenal dysfunction
You are very sensitive to gluten
Curious about the right diet for you? Reach out for a Functional Nutrition appointment today!

Have you ever wondered what our Five Stones are?
We must balance all these areas to live a healthy life, as each one affects the other. You can have great nutrition, but if you don't manage your stress well you won't assimilate your food and nutrients optimally. You can exercise every day and still suffer from symptoms of an increased viral load, which will need to be addressed through integrative medicine. Your bloodwork can be perfect, but if you feel lonely and isolated then you have an increased risk for mortality.
We firmly believe our patients heal quicker when all Five Stones are addressed.

Timeline photos 08/30/2022

Do you have a mindfulness practice? That could look like meditation, prayer, yoga, breath work, or any activity you do in a mindful way.
Mindfulness helps relieve stress and quiet the sympathetic nervous system which can in turn improve memory, blood pressure, cortisol levels, and many other factors that contribute to well being.
This is why Mindfulness is one of our Five Stones of wellness. It is a consideration in every care plan we co-create with our patients.
Call us today and begin your wellness journey. 703-669-6118

Cognitive Decline and related diseases are multifactorial, and need to be addressed from multiple angles. Many people do present with a dominant factor that is leading to their decline, but even in those cases the other factors are playing a role.
Exposure to herbicides and pesticides, as well as blood sugar dysregulation, are two contributing factors that you can begin to address through dietary changes:
1. Eat organic, grass fed and wild caught as often as possible.
2. Eat complex carbohydrates such as whole grains, quinoa, brown rice, and even potatoes (just not of the fried variety!)
3. Aim for at least 35 grams of fiber per day.

Did you know that stress can cause:
- Digestive issues such as gas, bloating, and altered bowels
- High blood pressure
- High blood sugar
- Fatigue
- Poor Memory
And SO much more?
Sources of stress are varied. Many of us attribute stress to work or emotional situations, but there can also be metabolic stress (when the body systems are not functioning properly) and physical stress (overexercising or overexerting yourself).
Our approach to healing addresses all areas of stress to bring you back into balance, and get you back to enjoying life to its fullest.

Are you looking for personal care products that don't contain harmful chemicals? We are excited to learn more and share about Hugh and Grace, a company founded to create products that won't alter your hormones.
Using products without harmful chemicals is extremely important when trying to heal from any chronic illness or autoimmune disease. So many additives can affect the body's hormone and detox systems which impairs healing.

Should you take Supplements for your Health?

If you've considered adding supplements to your diet, be sure to watch this video here to discover what, if any, supplements you should start taking.

Antiperspirants are made out of aluminum, which blocks your sweat ducts so that you literally cannot sweat. We know that your body absorbs everything you put on it, and that sweating is a great way to detox. So sticking a heavy metal in a vulnerable part of your body that literally inhibits detoxification is not good for your health.
More and more brands are coming out with products that are only deodorant, and creating reusable or compostable packaging so you don’t end up with the plastic tube as waste at the end!

Herbs are extremely high in polyphenols and antioxidants, adding health boosting nutrients to any dish you make.
Many herbs are easy to grow, and growing your own is better for your wallet AND the environment. Choose herbs you find yourself using a lot in your cooking or find yourself buying a bunch of just to throw away half. Basil, thyme, parsley, oregano, rosemary, and mint all grow well in the Virginia climate. Bonus if you dry them and keep them over the winter so you don’t even have to buy dry herbs!

Not very appetizing is it?
Here are ways to reduce your plastic use, and reduce the amount of plastic in the environment:
-Buy clothes made of only natural fibers: cotton, h**p, silk, wool. Polyester and nylon are made of plastic and shed micro plastics with each wash.
-Stop using plastic bags for produce – switch to cloth, or let your produce go naked!
-Head to a pick-your-own farm this summer for berries so you avoid the plastic packaging they normally come in
What are some ways you are reducing your plastic waste?
