Let's talk about that morning cup of coffee.
Coffee is high in antioxidants, which may contribute to the mild beneficial effect seen in small population studies showing a link between coffee consumption and a lower incidence of cognitive decline. While these preliminary studies are far from conclusive, we do know that for most people coffee can be a great part of a balanced diet. Just don't add a bunch of sweeteners!
However, you should probably skip the coffee if:
You are sensitive to caffeine
You are prone to headaches and/or migraines
You have high cortisol or adrenal dysfunction
You are very sensitive to gluten

We must balance all these areas to live a healthy life, as each one affects the other. Cognitive Decline and related diseases are multifactorial, and need to be addressed from multiple angles. Many people do present with a dominant factor that is leading to their decline, but even in those cases the other factors are playing a role.
Exposure to herbicides and pesticides, as well as blood sugar dysregulation, are two contributing factors that you can begin to address through dietary changes:
1. Eat organic, grass fed and wild caught as often as possible.
2. Eat complex carbohydrates such as whole grains, quinoa, brown rice, and even potatoes (just not of the fried variety!)
3. Aim for at least 35 grams of fiber per day.

Antiperspirants are made out of aluminum, which blocks your sweat ducts so that you literally cannot sweat. We know that your body absorbs everything you put on it, and that sweating is a great way to detox. So sticking a heavy metal in a vulnerable part of your body that literally inhibits detoxification is not good for your health.
More and more brands are coming out with products that are only deodorant, and creating reusable or compostable packaging so you don’t end up with the plastic tube as waste at the end!

Herbs are extremely high in polyphenols and antioxidants, adding health boosting nutrients to any dish you make.
Many herbs are easy to grow, and growing your own is better for your wallet AND the environment. Choose herbs you find yourself using a lot in your cooking or find yourself buying a bunch of just to throw away half. Basil, thyme, parsley, oregano, rosemary, and mint all grow well in the Virginia climate. Bonus if you dry them and keep them over the winter so you don’t even have to buy dry herbs!

Here are ways to reduce your plastic use, and reduce the amount of plastic in the environment:
-Buy clothes made of only natural fibers: cotton, h**p, silk, wool. Polyester and nylon are made of plastic and shed micro plastics with each wash.
-Stop using plastic bags for produce – switch to cloth, or let your produce go naked!
-Head to a pick-your-own farm this summer for berries so you avoid the plastic packaging they normally come in
