We are a nonprofit group in Lee's Summit and have been providing mental health services for children

We empower children and families in our community to thrive. A majority of our clients include those navigating the difficult terrain of divorce, separation, and those grappling with underlying mental health and substance abuse issues.

It's been 1 month since our 5th Annual Fall Fundraising Event at the Blue Hills Country Club in Kansas City!

At EPKC we do not promise miracles -- we promise consistency. We serve more than 300 children and families each year, many referred by courts, schools, and attorneys who trust us with the hardest cases. The need is growing, and we can’t meet it without partners who are willing to stay with us in the hard work.

We are truly grateful for the opportunity to serve Jackson County and its surrounding areas through the help of supporters, donors, and sponsors like you.

EP312: Better Together: Navigating Co-Parenting with Lisa Erickson 05/12/2025

Our CEO, Lisa Erickson, recently joined Mac-Arthur Pierre-Louis on his podcast, LMI.Network, to talk about what healthy co-parenting really looks like after separation or divorce.

With 15+ years of experience supporting families in high-conflict situations, Lisa shared practical guidance on:

✔️ Building sustainable co-parenting systems
✔️ Handling medical, extracurricular, and blended family conflicts
✔️ Using co-parenting apps without losing real communication
✔️ Remembering that your family is still a family, just reconfigured

This episode is especially valuable for family lawyers, mediators, therapists, and anyone walking alongside families in transition.

Our Founder & CEO, Lisa Erickson, spotlights some of our most important services we offer: Parenting Assessments & Substance Abuse Evaluations.

What does this look like?

📋 Comprehensive Parenting Assessments: Helping parents and caregivers to understand their strengths and areas for growth. These are frequently used as a more affordable option in family court cases to create action plans for improvement.

✅ Substance Abuse Assessments: Offering insights into treatment recommendations and support pathways to help families achieve stability and wellness.

These services are not only evidence-based but also tailored to each family. Tune in to the video below to learn more or visit us at https://epkc.org/services/

Since its inception in 2019, EPKC has attracted approximately 200 new children and families per year, excluding its recurring clientele.

A majority of our clients include those experiencing divorce, separation, underlying mental health issues, and substance abuse.

Together, we can create a brighter, more harmonious tomorrow for all children, fostering hope, understanding, and enduring connections in their lives. ⭐

Is co-parenting considered therapy? This is a common question many people have, and a lot of times it's because it's provided by a licensed clinical therapist in a therapeutic setting.

The goal is to work on the issues at hand and finding a constructive, neutral territory to parent children with minimal tension. It's not used as a mediation too, but it is possible for a parenting plan to be utilized.

What are the rules for communication while co-parenting? When in doubt, try BIFF.

💬 Brief
💬 Informative
💬 Firm
💬 Friendly

This approach is ideal for parents who want to learn to co-parent and communicate more effectively with each other.

We were honored to have been at the 22nd Annual Mayor's Character Breakfast at the John Knox Pavillion a couple weeks ago!

The Mayor's Character Breakfast is an annual fundraising event for Lee's Summit CARES. Funds raised are used to support efforts in prevention work for youth and families in the area.

The goal of co-parenting is to offer children a happy, healthy, and safe relationship with both parents. A lot of time and effort is put into creating a constructive parenting plan, so it's important to acknowledge that it will grow and evolve as the children do.

But what makes for a healthy parenting plan? Effective communication between both parents. This looks like:

💬 Identifying communication tools (ex: apps)
💬 Detailing the how, when, and where of communication
💬 Clarifying response timeframes

💥 MYTH BUSTED 💥

Co-Parenting is not considered "therapy". It's often utilized in circuit and family court with adults who experience high-conflict environments with raising their children.

The goal is to work on the issues at hand and finding a constructive, neutral territory to parent children with minimal tension. It's not used as a mediation too, but it is possible for a parenting plan to be utilized.
