🐦 if a nurse or provider is being unkind, neglectful, or downright rude to you- ask to speak to the charge nurse for a staff swap. Explain what you need instead of what that staff member is providing to help you find someone who fits your needs a little better.

🐦 if a staff member can't put into words why something "should" be done, and says "that's just how we do things" that is a red flag! Ask for the benefits and risks of EVERYTHING, no matter how small it seems.

🐦 Many hospital providers tend to act like that what they are doing isn't important to explain or elaborate on, when in reality that is when it's MOST important. Ask questions, require full explanations about procedures, medications, and policies, and ask these questions EARLY in care.

Hang out with me here for more tips and info 💛

Black Maternal Health Week 2026 was this past week and we waited to post for reflection.

We are both white doulas, and we believe firmly in raising up the voices of BIPOC families and birthworkers to share their stories and their voices surrounding their lived experiences, trauma, and obstetrical violence and dismissal experienced and witnessed.

We as a birthworker community can do better! We must strive to support black families to eliminate the massive disparity between white maternal mortality (14.5 per 100,000) and black maternal mortality (50.3 per 100,000)

Bringing awareness to this horrifying statistic and its realities is exactly what white birthworkers need to be doing- then, stepping back and allowing black birthworkers and families to amplify their voices.

We can create change. We can do better. And it starts with each one of us.

Justice and Joy is the theme for this year, showing the duality between what we can do as birthworkers: standing firm in our support and advocacy of families while also celebrating their joyful, incredible moments of welcoming a new member to their family.

If you've read this far, thank you for spending a few minutes here. Now, please go check out some informative blogs, books, or content from black birthworkers. Birthing Liberation by Sabia Wade is one of my favorite choices for introducing folks to the depth of discrimination and ostracization that black families experience in the childbearing year.

Staying in bed, especially laying on your back and planning an unmedicated birth is like taking a walk barefoot over a bunch of Legos 😭

Instead, changing positions every hour at a minimum (even changing sides if you are sleeping/resting) will help your labor progress and ideally prevent unnecessary interventions, especially in the hospital setting.

Always listen to your body and your baby. If something doesn't feel right or baby isn't tolerating well, change positions for an improvement.

Share this with your birth support team so they have ideas on positional changes in labor, and stick around for more tips 💛
