📚💚Purposeful instruction with many opportunities for student success is the mission of Barrett Elementary’s Summer Literacy Camp! I saw students engaged in instruction targeted to their needs such as three part drill, decoding blending lines, letter name and sound activities, encoding, and reading decodable text.
A special treat yesterday for the Kindergarten and 1st grade students was traveling across the street to the newly reopened East Lake Library for an educational (and interactive) presentation on reptiles! Students gained important background knowledge and vocabulary and memorable experiences getting hands on with the animals! 🐢🐍🦎

TRL PA Members,

Welcome to Summer Skill Saturdays! Each Saturday this summer, I will share a resource focused on a literacy skill or strategy!
This is the second Saturday in this series.

This Saturday, it’s Sight Word Saturday! This week, I am sharing six resources to deepen your knowledge and practice related to how words become sight words!
Here is a summary of the six resources curated on the infographic I am sharing with everyone for this Summer Skill Saturday:

1. The Illusion of Whole Word Reading: By Dr. Stanislas Dehaene
From this short snip of, How The Brain Learns to Read , we will dip into the myth of whole word reading, and oh how that French accent makes this video even better!!! You can watch the full video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25GI3-kiLdo&t=1115s

2. Increasing activity in the area of the brain best wired for reading: This resource embeds a Read, Listen, Watch and DO related to the fascinating research conducted by Dr. Bruce Mc Candliss.

3. This outstanding PaTTAN Literacy Snippet: Sight Recognition: Making it Stick, summarizes how we develop a sight word vocabulary in just 6 minutes!

4. The Reading League PA was honored to host eminent researcher and translator of research, Dr. Katie Pace Miles. Dr. Miles joined us for a presentation on, Types of High Frequency Words: Implications for Instruction. Like those who attended this session live, you will be glued to every minute of this recorded presentation.

5. Just this past week, Molly Ness and Dr. Katie Pace Miles joined edWeb for a webinar related to their upcoming Scholastic Book, Orthographic Mapping: How to Make Words Stick. Over 4,000 people registered for this webinar and for good reason!
This book is sure to be a blockbuster! In addition to the incredible knowledge shared in this webinar, a four-step instructional routine for making words stick was shared. Goto the link on the infographic to register at edWeb to watch the recording if you missed it!

6. Finally, the resource page from the website of Dr. Katie Pace Miles is chock-full of resources not to be missed. Related to this week’s Summer Skill Saturdays, be sure not to miss the High Frequency Word resources and take the time to explore so much more on this incredible site!

That’s it for this Saturday!! There was so much more I wanted to share this week, so be on the lookout throughout the coming week for some additional resources. I hope it is a sunny summer Saturday wherever you are!
