Spent the afternoon at DIB Bangkok and left with my head full of ideas. As we continue developing the Route 66 Centennial Traveling Exhibit, I'm excited to think about how we can create experiences that invite visitors to reflect on their own journeys and memories.
From James Turrell's "Straight Up," which reminded me of the American Southwest from halfway around the world, to climbing inside Surasi Kusolwong's upside-down VW Beetle, I found myself thinking about travel, memory, and the stories we attach to places and objects.
I also loved Hiroshi Sugimoto's photograph of the Tri-City Drive-In in San Bernardino and took full advantage of Marco Fusinato's interactive installation "Constellations," which lets visitors take a baseball bat to the artwork and reminds me of a temple gong, but was very therapeutic.
Days like this remind me why I love museums! And yes, sitting in an upside-down VW definitely felt like a Route 66 moment. If your organization, museum, foundation, or corporate sponsorship program is interested in helping bring this vision to communities nationwide, I'd love to connect.
One of the most rewarding parts of the Route 66 Centennial Traveling Exhibit has been meeting people who stop by to share their memories, family stories, photographs, and archival treasures with us.
During our stop in Grants, New Mexico, at the Cibola Arts Council, we had the privilege of speaking with Maggie Billiman, who shared the story of her father, Howard Billiman, a Navajo Code Talker who served during World War II.
We're excited to share this brief clip and are looking forward to featuring Maggie's story in a longer video in the near future.
Every community along Route 66 has stories worth preserving, and we're grateful to everyone who has trusted us with theirs.

It was so much fun and so helpful to have the New Mexico Route 66 Association attend the Route 66 Centennial Traveling Exhibit! Volunteers helped with our youth events, manned the entrance table and were there to answer questions from the public. We look forward to more adventures on the Mother Road with you!

Honored to share our work on Route 66, Indigenous history, and documentary storytelling with Marcello Gandolfi's students in the Bachelor of Science in International Sustainable Tourism at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU), a programme developed with the active involvement of UN Tourism and committed to advancing sustainable tourism in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
We explored how documentaries, public history, and tourism intersect, and the importance of building trust with communities whose stories have too often been overlooked or misrepresented.
At the Route 66 Centennial Traveling Exhibit in Springfield, we were honored to host a powerful conversation featuring Kaisa Barthuli, retired Program Director of the National Park Service’s Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program, alongside Irv Logan and Elizabeth Calvin, grandchildren of Alberta Ellis, who owned and operated Alberta’s Hotel in Springfield, Missouri, a Green Book property.
In this clip, Irv and Elizabeth reflect on their grandmother’s tenacious spirit, the legacy she built through Alberta’s Hotel, and their own experiences living through segregation and integration.
These personal stories remind us that Route 66 history is not only about the road itself, but also about the people who built community, resilience, and belonging along it.
Thank you to our panelists for sharing these memories and helping preserve this history for future generations.
