For the first time ever, we are collaborating with the KPR & Audio Reader Sensory Garden to support a transition to a lower-maintenance garden. Laura Odell is consulting with their Director, Head Volunteer Gardener, and Volunteer Coordinator to make a plan that requires less irrigation, mulch, and replacement plantings.

Happy National Gardening Day! We are looking for professional gardeners to join our maintenance team. We are also willing to train new gardeners who enjoy working outside and learning about plants! -Starting pay $16 per hour, with yearly raises and end of the year bonuses. Lots of creative potential to grow.
-Schedule M-F 8:00-5:00 (includes 2 paid breaks & off clock lunch if more than 30 mins)
-NO mandatory weekends or crazy industry overtime.
-Dental, Vision, 401k & Life Insurance
-Paid Holidays after 90 days for fulltime crew members i.e. Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, & Christmas or closest day to it depending on where it lands.
-Birthday paid day off (or a chosen day close to it within the same week)

USING LIRIOPE GROUNDCOVER UNDER
TREES INSTEAD OF LAWN
A groundcover area is simply a mass planting of a single plant serving the same purpose of a lawn-to fill large areas of landscape space with one type of plant. A "groundcover" is considered an area in which you do not mow whereas a "lawn" area is regularly mowed. Mowing and maintaining that water-thirsty lawn under your large shade trees is expensive and time-consuming! In the long run, you are fighting a losing battle in which the tree roots will outcompete lawn for water and nutrients. We are in business to help your landscape look beautiful with the least amount of maintenance possible. Groundcover lawn alternatives offer many advantages where grass won't grow. Liriope (LIRIOPE SPICATA) is the most grass-like plant for this purpose. It can be regularly "mowed" in the same way you would a lawn grass.

LIRIOPE WILL GROW IN THESE CHALLENGING AREAS

1. Under rootbound large shade trees such as Oak, Maple, and Birch where grass won't grow. Competes well even with shallow-rooted trees.
2. In shallow rocky soils, hard-packed clay soils, sandy soils, any soil except wet.
3. Northside of a house in full year-round shade.
4. In-between crevices of large retaining walls.
5. On 30-60 degree angle slopes too steep to mow. Cover the slope with Liriope instead of an expensive retaining wall.
6. In narrow difficult to water strips between sidewalk and street.
7. Parking lot islands preferably in conjunction with a shade tree.
8. In places where you want up to 99% w**d suppression.
9. In areas that you want to create near zero maintenance.
​10. In medium to heavy foot traffic areas including dog traffic.
