Here’s five different volunteer dates in May at Lawrence Community Orchard! LCO is a free food park that’s maintained by volunteers like you! We grow all sorts of fruit trees, fruit bushes, vegetables, herbs and fibre plants. We also produce fruit trees in our nursery for other community projects in Lawrence. Volunteering with us is an opportunity to learn about trees, make friends, and connect with nature! We hope to see you this May.

Recap from Saturdays work day: we planted strawberries! Uncovered one of the figs, was it too early? We’ll find out. We focused on getting nursery trees potted and new rootstocks planted in the field. We potted up apples, trifoliate orange, black raspberries, jujube and planted pear rootstocks in the ground. We received a truck load of city compost! Thanks Josh! Sifted composted from our homegrown compost bin. Got the mower out and worked on some of the taller grass. Thank you for showing up and supporting Lawrence Fruit Tree Project! Our next workday is in 2 weeks, April 18th 1-4pm.

Last Saturday we had over 25 volunteers! With all that help we cleaned up litter along Burroughs creek between 13th and 14th st. We cleared brush for a pocket public orchard project at our neighbors. We got all the garden beds prepped and some seeds planted. We got all the mulberry, jujube, paw paw, and bush cherry potted up. We uncovered figs (half way). It’s really amazing what we can do when we get big numbers of people showing up for the orchard! We’ll be back at the orchard Saturday April 4th 1-4 pm. We look forward to seeing you then!
