Lulu is a 2 year old, female Chow Chow mix. She's a small gal at only 40 lbs full grown, and with the most stunning different colored eyes!

🩷 How did Lulu arrive to Lawrence Humane?
Lulu arrived with her puppies as a transfer from a shelter in Oklahoma where she was going to be euthanized. She was about a year old, underweight, and terribly undersocialized. We don't know her backstory or what she went through before she arrived at the shelter in Oklahoma. What we did quickly realize is that whoever had her most likely kept her outside and did not socialize her. She was scared of humans, unsure of other dogs, and uncomfortable being inside.

🩷 How has Lawrence Humane helped Lulu?
Our staff have REALLY put in the work to socialize her and help her not be so afraid of everything. Lulu's true champion has been one of our adoption counselors, Lexi Link. Lexi has spent countless hours working with Lulu, slowly building her trust, and helping Lulu understand that humans aren't so bad, there's joy to be found in life, and that treats make everything better!

It took Lexi over a month to gain Lulu's trust. And for a long time, Lexi was the only person who Lulu trusted. But because of Lexi's hard work and the dedication of our other staff (and particularly our Behavior team), Lulu is now willing to open up to more people. She willingly goes outside with other staff members and volunteers, and allows them to take her to daily doggy playgroups. And she's even starting to go out on Mass Street Mutts outings!|

🩷 What kind of home would be best for Lulu?
We would love to see her go to a foster or adoptive home with another dog (or maybe even a couple of dogs!). She is definitely more comfortable when there's other dogs around and being in a home with another dog would help her build confidence.

Lulu ideally shouldn’t be in a home with small children because they may scare her. She could live with older, calmer kids. We don't know how she handles cats, but we think she could coexist with them if provided a slow introduction with treats and positive reinforcement.

Because we believe she was an outdoor dog for the first part of her life and then has spent the rest of her life living at the shelter, Lulu has never had the opportunity to be house trained. But because of how well she learns through treats and positive reinforcement, we believe she can definitely be house trained. Also, if she goes to a home with another dog, she will learn that much faster. It would be awesome if she could have access to the beloved great outdoors through a doggy door, backyard, or walks and hikes. She also adores lounging by the doggy pool. Our Behavior team is currently working with Lulu on kennel training, which is going really well!

Lulu is also very playful with her people that she trusts - she'll jump around and do little play bows to entice you to play with her! We really can't emphasize enough how HUGE this is given how she was when she arrived here. This is something that comes very naturally to most dogs, but Lulu had to learn it at an older age and it's the result of a lot of hard work on her part and our staff's part, which makes it that much more special.

After many months of construction near the animal shelter, 19th street is reopened! Woohoo! 🥳 To celebrate, we're offering our animal-loving community $19 adoption fees on all adult animals (6 months or older) and handheld pets (bunnies, guinea pigs, etc.)

Who would like to help save lives and foster one of our long-stay cat residents for awhile?!

We have several cats currently in our care that would love the chance to decompress outside the shelter! Each cat is unique so patience and a willingness to go at the cat’s pace is a must! We are hopeful that with your help, they will show us their true selves in a foster home and quickly be adopted 😊 more info is provided in the caption of each photo.

With so many new pups arriving at Lawrence Humane this week, we thought a photoshoot was in order to highlight their cutest attributes. Bonnie and all of our adoptable adult dogs are included in this week’s adoption special. All adult dogs are only $19, in celebration of the opening of 19th Street after many months of construction. The road to the shelter is clear, so what are you waiting for?

We'll be doing pet portraits from 11am to 2pm at Lawrence Humane, but you need to sign up for a slot! You can do so at https://lawrencehumane.jotform.com/261616022500846

Portraits are $25 for the first image, and $15 for each additional image, with a maximum of 4 per session. And all proceeds go towards the cost of care for the 7,500+ pets that come to Lawrence Humane annually!

Whatcha doing this evening?! Our friends at Sunflower Outdoor & Bike Shop are kicking off a brand new venture - Give Back Thursdays, a community happy hour initiative in their cafe! We will be outside Sunflower TONIGHT (Thursday, June 18th) under a lime green tent with some of our summer merch AND Phineas, a 6-year-old cutie patootie who is looking for his forever home!
