Leo A. Beuerman called himself a “fearless daredevil.” Born on a Douglas County farm in 1902, Beuerman experienced many physical difficulties but achieved a full life thanks to his own creativity and perseverance, plus loving support from family and friends. Always mechanically inclined, Beuerman ran a thriving watch-repair business, and among his inventions were an elevator for the family home and, famously, a wagon that he used to get around downtown Lawrence and sell pencils and other small items. Having become a fixture of the Lawrence scene, Beuerman was the subject of a short film that was nominated for an Oscar in 1969. Although the film didn’t win, Beuerman’s friends presented him with a local “Oscar” trophy, which is now on display at the Watkins. Leo A. Beuerman died in 1974 but remains an icon of Lawrence history.
