Outdoors Unscripted
A festival celebrating the adventures we have in the great state of Kansas.
Do you have a creative idea inspired by nature in Kansas?
You don’t have to be a professional artist to apply. Outdoors Unscripted is offering six $1,000 grants to support projects that celebrate the people, places, stories, and landscapes that make Kansas unique.
Whether you enjoy photography, writing, music, painting, filmmaking, dance, conservation, gardening, community engagement, or another creative pursuit, we encourage you to share your vision.
These grants are made possible through the generosity of the City of Lawrence Community Arts Grant program and the Douglas County Natural and Cultural Heritage Foundation, whose support helps foster creativity, connection, and appreciation for the outdoors across Kansas.
We can’t wait to hear your ideas! Apply by July 15th. More details and info about past grant recipients are available at outdoorsunscripted.org/sosaa and at the link in our profile.
What story does the land inspire you to tell?
Outdoors Unscripted is excited to announce the return of our Showcasing Open Spaces through Accessible Adventure (SOSAA) grant program in partnership with the City of Lawrence and the Douglas County Heritage Conservation Council.
We are now accepting proposals for creative, place-based projects that explore connection to the land through art, storytelling, learning, observation, movement, community engagement, and curiosity.
We’re looking for projects that:
🌻 Engage thoughtfully with local landscapes and ecosystems
🌻 Include a strong creative and public-facing component
🌻 Build bridges across communities and perspectives
🌻 Encourage stewardship, accessibility, belonging, and deeper connection to place
You do not need to be a professional artist or ecologist to apply. We welcome a wide range of lived experiences, identities, creative practices, and ways of engaging with the land.
✨ Up to 6 projects will receive $1,000 awards
✨ Open to Douglas County-based applicants
✨ Proposal deadline: July 15, 2026
Application details available at the link in our profile, and at outdoorsunscripted.org

We have some very exciting news! Thanks to an incredible outpouring of community support, Outdoors Unscripted is continuing on in 2026!
This year, our goal is to keep lifting up local artists, adventurers, healers, nature-lovers, and culture-bearers through open-access events that bring people together across disciplines, identities, and landscapes. Expect more gatherings that celebrate creativity, connection, and our shared love for the prairies, woodlands and wetlands that are our home.
We have so many ideas brewing and can’t wait to share what’s next! Stay tuned, and thank you for being part of this wonderful community 💗
