A former Forest School friend brought me a little bit of nature in my new habitat! I love this thoughtful little person and their creativity!

POV: when you are running behind schedule to get to summer camp and you see a bunch of at the curb, and you do not hesitate to throw your car in reverse and load it up!

Explorers, ages 3.5 - 6 years old

Our program is unique in the Forest school/nature school world because most of our students are upper elementary and middle school aged. There are fewer models for this kind of program and we are constantly evolving to meet the needs of our students. A consistent desire of our students and staff has been access to meaningful hands-on, land based projects. We are SO excited to announce our partnership with Home Works USA for creating these opportunities! Home Works USA is a local, grassroots non-profit with a mission to provide affordable housing for young people aging out of the foster care system in a community and nature based setting. Located just outside Lawrence on 26 acres, Home Works will offer 15 affordable housing units, daily supportive services, and access to nature through on site woodland trails, a community garden, and more. We are partnering with Home Works beginning this fall to offer our students a weekly outdoor skills lab in forestry, agriculture and nature stewardship. Students will have opportunities to build trails, plant and maintain garden areas, develop new areas for agricultural growth, identify and mediate invasive plants, and more! The Home Works USA mission states “Home works, nature helps, and services matter.” We couldn’t agree more, and we are thrilled to be able to serve our community and offer this learning opportunity to our students! Today we spent the morning touring the site and getting our hands a little dirty with some spring planting and site clean up. We can’t wait to go back this fall!

Yesterday we made Dandelion play dough. The end product and texture was nice, but strangely the smell was a bit unpleasant. Next time, we will add some essential oil to the mix. Still, it was a fun and interesting sensory experience!

Just some examples of vestibular sense development happening in an average Monday at Forest School. The vestibular sense is essential in the regulation of emotions, the development of feelings of safety and security, impulse control, and numerous other aspects of self-regulation. It is developed through big body movements, spinning, balancing, hanging, and rolling. Just look at the JOY in this natural process! Bodies allowed to move know what they need!
