Saint Bridget of Sweden

Bridget of Sweden was married at 13 and the mother of eight children (the second eldest was St. Catherine of Sweden). After the death of her husband of twenty years, she founded the Bridgettines nuns and monks. Bridget was a mystic, who received visions from early childhood which became more frequent and definite. She believed that Christ Himself appeared to her, and she wrote down the revelations she then received.

Happy Feast of Our Lady of Mt Carmel!

Today we celebrate the Memorial of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, with special gratitude for her gift to us of the Brown Scapula, worn by our beloved Patron himself throughout his life:

“Two truths are evoked by the sign of the Scapular: on the one hand, the constant protection of the Blessed Virgin, not only on life's journey, but also at the moment of passing into the fullness of eternal glory; on the other, the awareness that devotion to her cannot be limited to prayers and tributes in her honor on certain occasions, but must become a ‘habit,’ that is, a permanent orientation of one's own Christian conduct, woven of prayer and interior life, through frequent reception of the sacraments and the concrete practice of the spiritual and corporal works of mercy.”

“This feast, instituted in the 14th century for the Carmelite order, commemorates the day in 1251 when the Blessed Mother gave the brown scapular to Saint Simon Stock. ‘Even now, centuries removed from that original experience and even in places where there are no Carmelites, this holy scapular is still seen as a sign of Mary’s protection and a sign that continues to call people and make them feel that they are the beloved children of the Virgin Mary” (Saint Paul VI). Our Lady invites us to imitate her in a contemplative union with Jesus. “Mary was the first, in a way which can never be equaled, to believe and experience that Jesus, the incarnate Word, is the summit, the peak of man’s encounter with God” (Pope Benedict XVI).”
