What a treat to research in the archives at the Gilbertsville Free Library in Otsego County, New York! Built in 1818, the stone building was originally a schoolhouse, then used by a gravestone maker and later a blacksmith. It has been used as a library since 1889.

I just downloaded my digital copy of NYG&B's "New York State Archives Guide" by Jane E. Wilcox, FGBS. I am in awe of Jane's work. This publication is a must-have for New York State researchers!!

What a beautiful day for a successful research trip to the Essex County Courthouse in Elizabethtown, New York and Central Cemetery in Jay, New York. As a bonus, the Town Historian in Jay kindly took me through the covered bridge built in 1857, with the original beams!

I would have liked to have met this clerk in 1823!

My article on "Becoming a Professional Genealogist" was published as the cover article in the most recent issue of the Association for Professional Genealogists Quarterly (Sept 2022). I'm grateful for the opportunity to work with APGQ editor, Julie Cahill Tarr and excited my work is featured in the same issue as articles by Bryna O'Sullivan, Carla S. Cegielski, Cyndi Ingle, Drew Smith, and Julie Cahill Tarr -- genealogists whose work I admire.

NYS Historic Newspapers is a free database of historical newspapers from all of New York's 62 counties. The search engine is simple to use and searches can be narrowed down by date, newspaper, and location. I found my 3rd great grandfather's 1883 obituary, listing his 1821 birthdate and location, his wife with her maiden name, and other fun facts! What gems have you found in newspaper research?
