Congratulations to Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center for 5 successful years of operation of their CHP plant! 🥳
We designed, built and assisted operations of the 8 MW CHP plant in 2019.
Since the CHP plant came online in 2019:
✅ 262,783,091 kWh has been produced
✅ the engine has operated for 42,957 hours
✅ the hospital’s carbon emissions have been reduced by over ~230,000 tons (equivalent to removing 37,500 cars off of the road!)
The cogeneration plant meets 98% of the hospital’s thermal consumption and meets 54% of electric consumption.
The plant is predicted to reduce Hershey Medical Center’s total utility cost by $3 million annually.
Watch how CPT provided Atlantic Health System with a turnkey energy solution 💡
In 2021, we designed, built, and assisted operations of Morristown Medical Center’s cogeneration plant.
The 4.6 MW CHP system includes:
✔ Natural gas fired Solar Turbines Mercury 50 turbine generator
✔ 13,000 lb/hr Cleaver-Brooks Heat Recovery Steam Generator
✔ Load Management System (LMS)
Generating steam and electricity for the Level 1 Trauma Center, the CHP plant increases the hospital’s resiliency and ability to support critical functions if power is lost.

Massachusetts faces some of the highest energy rates nationwide.
As the largest healthcare system in Central Mass., UMass Memorial Medical Center addressed its energy costs and found a solution with CPT.
In 2019, we designed, built and assisted operations of UMMC’s 2.65 MW CHP plant.
UMMC’s CHP system consists of:
✔ 2.65 MW Jenbacher reciprocating engine
✔ Heat recovery steam generator (HRSG)
✔ 360-ton hot water absorption chiller
The hospital’s CHP plant runs 24/7/365 (besides maintenance) & saves UMMC approx. $1-1.2 million in energy and operational savings each year!
It is anticipated that the hospital will generate total savings of $24 million throughout its first 10 years of operation.

In a partnership with Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) and Harrison Street, we are leveraging our expertise to support WPI’s ongoing commitment to achieve carbon neutrality 🍃
We are helping WPI accelerate their strategic efforts to reduce its carbon footprint by:
✅ Improving its power plant
✅ Expanding energy-conservation measures
✅ Developing sustainable energy system upgrades and technologies for the college’s campus
Harrison Street, WPI & CPT have identified a series of options spanning:
✅ Solar
✅ Combined heat and power
✅ Efficiency upgrades
✅ Microgrids
✅ Geothermal walls
We are so excited about this partnership with Harrison Street to explore renewable technologies. Stay tuned for more updates!

In honor of National Engineers Week, we’re proud to highlight Jim Day, CEM, Senior Project Manager 🛠
Jim has nearly 3 decades of experience in energy operations, maintenance, and management. He graduated from Thomas Edison State College with a B.S. in Nuclear Engineering Technology and is a Certified Energy Manager. He also served in the U.S. Navy as a Machinist Mate 2nd Class on the USS Phoenix, SSN-702.
Dedicated to raising awareness of engineers’ positive contributions to our quality of life, the National Academy of Engineering celebrates National Engineering Week to promote the importance of a higher technical education and strives to motivate youth to pursue a career in engineering.
Jim offers his best advice to aspiring engineers of how to excel in this challenging, yet immensely rewarding profession:
✅ Find good mentors. The industry is small, so it’s important to build relationships with the people you work with.
✅ Ask questions! Approach every situation as an opportunity to learn.
✅ Seek problems and be solution-minded. Problems are everywhere: in your kitchen, backyard, house. Engineers are professional problem solvers. Never stop developing your critical thinking skills.

CPT is nearly complete with Phase I of a large-scale Emergency Backup Generator System! 😎
All Phase I equipment has been installed, tested and commissioned. We are currently collaborating with our client to develop and implement a plan to transition from the existing generator system to the new one.
The new generator system consists of:
✅Four 2.5 MW Emergency Diesel Generators
✅ State-of-the-Art Tier 4 Emissions Control Technology
✅ Power Monitoring and Control (PMAC) Systems, capable of automated load shed/add, monitoring emergency system load at the ATS level and allowing an operator to manually transition any connected ATS between normal and power energy
Phase II will commence once the transition plan has been implemented. CPT will mount components into the existing system that will tie the entire scheme together. The emergency generators will undergo emission testing in the coming weeks.
Upon project completion, the client shall have a new state-of-the-art emergency system that is capable of supplying 10 MW of emergency power to the building served by the emergency system!

Don’t become a victim to severe storms! ❄
As winter storms sweep the Northeast, thousands become vulnerable to power outages.
🔌 On-site generation is crucial for critical facilities, such as hospitals and nursing homes.
⚡ The image below illustrates how an extreme winter storm left our client, St. Joseph's Health, with damaged power lines.
🏝 Despite the utility power outage, the hospital went into “island” mode and continued normal operations thanks to their Cogeneration (CHP) plant that provided power and steam!
Combined Heat and Power plants:
✔ operate independently from the utility (“island mode”)
✔ create a more resilient, independent power system
✔ can black start when all of the power is out
Let us design and build a dependable CHP plant for your facility!

Construction of our second design-build CHP project for Atlantic Health System is in full swing!
✅ The existing boiler room has been cleared out and slabs have been poured.
✅ A small 2-story addition is being constructed to accommodate for a new 2.7 MW engine generator.
