Not a lot of people know the story of our coffee…
It was in 1992, when Gary decided it was time for Emporio Rulli to start roasting our own coffee. One day, a customer suggested Gary contact Alfred Peet, founder of Peet’s Coffee. So Gary reached out. Though Alfred had recently retired, he agreed to mentor Gary on roasting and blend development.
At the same time, Gary continued making trips throughout Italy studying traditional espresso blends, roasting styles, and flavor profiles. Those experiences helped shape the traditional blends we continue roasting today.
More than 30 years later, our traditional coffee blends continue to be roasted locally right here in Marin.

From the Rulli archives — “Chocolate Dipped Gooseberries” (2010)
A Milanese tradition Gary learned over 40 years ago. The seeds were brought back from Italy, and the gooseberries have been growing in his backyard in Marin for over 16 years now.
Slightly tart, with a flavor somewhere between a cherry tomato and a pineapple.
This week, we’re making them again.

Zeppole di San Giuseppe are now being made at Emporio Rulli.
Prepared each year for St. Joseph’s Day, these delicate fried pastries are layered with vanilla sponge, Kirsch, whipped cream, pastry cream, and Amarena cherries.
Available through Sunday, March 22, then gone until next year.

The legend of Befanini…
These traditional Italian anise cookies are named after La Befana, the folkloric figure tied to Epiphany and the sharing of sweets. Their story takes a turn along the Tuscan coast, where a 19th-century cargo ship carrying anise is said to have sunk in the Tyrrhenian Sea off Viareggio. What returned to shore found its way into local baking, giving Befanini their unmistakable flavor.
Shaped as stars and finished with colorful nonpareils, they’re our most playful pastry, bringing joy to children at the case and a sense of nostalgia to adults during the quieter winter months.
