Yesterday, in the middle of class, a student raised her hand and asked, “Mrs. Hicks, did you get your jacket from Wal-Mart?”
I smiled. “Actually, I got it from GW.”
She blinked. “The what?”
“Goodwill.” I gave a little grin and a playful hair flip, just to sell it.
Suddenly, everyone was listening.
“That’s gross, Mrs. Hicks.”
“I don’t want to wear clothes somebody else wore.”
“I only wear Nike and stuff.”
So math paused, and life stepped in.
I told them something simple. Whether my clothes are brand new or secondhand, from a big brand or a discount rack, they all get washed the same way. Same machine. Same soap. Same water. Most of those fancy labels are made in the same factories overseas anyway.
And the truth is, I have found some great pieces at Goodwill. Nike. Under Armour. Ralph Lauren. Carhartt. Things people would gladly pay full price for. Good stuff, just waiting on the rack. They had no idea what they were passing up.
Then we went back to math.
But the moment stayed with me.
I can look around my classroom and spot the kids who do not have much. The ones who rotate the same few outfits every week. I will never let them feel small or embarrassed because their clothes are not new.
I have been broke. Truly broke. I have counted change to buy ramen and stretch it to payday. Those seasons were hard, but they built grit and gratitude.
Lately, my health has not been great either. I started this year facing a tough diagnosis. At this point in my life, “fashion” barely makes the list of things that matter.
A label does not decide your value. Your character does. How you treat people. How you show up. How kind you choose to be.
That is what lasts.
So parents, please teach your kids to stay humble.
Life can shift overnight.
And one day, that three dollar Goodwill pullover might be the very thing that keeps them warm, and reminds them what really counts.
