Behold our backyard permaculture! This is a section of our black currant bushes. It demonstrates a balanced system that does not use chemical pesticides or herbicides. There are wild mushrooms emerging between the rows. What you don't see is the mycelium network underground that feeds the roots of the currants. Above ground you can see the oft maligned creeping Charly which attracts pollinators to the area in the early spring when food is scarce. The natural ground cover also makes the plants more drought resistant as it traps moisture near the roots. Together there is a sustainable habitat that provides cover for beneficial insects like ladybugs and parasitic wasps. Everything is working together in balance naturally for the mutual benefit of all. There is something spiritual about it.

The black and red currant bushes are loaded with flowers. You may be able to see a bumblebee collecting pollen. We are looking forward to a bountiful harvest in July!

Our first farmers market at the South Lansing Farmers Market was a success! We sold out our lettuce and most of our plants. Come see us on Thursdays!
