Recycling Raccoons
No one knows more about trash and recycling in Michigan than our raccoons. Brought to you by EGLE.
Carlos here and maybe it’s the movies I’m watching, but recently I can’t stop thinking “Why I oughta … break down that box before recycling it curbside!”
I don’t know. I just can’t get “The Basics” of out of my head. Once you learn them, it’s like recycling becomes second nature — it’s so easy!
You want to know what’s in my bin? Who’s asking? Joking! Your favorite raccoon (me … Frank) keeps his bin packed with the best that common household materials have to offer.
Every year, the Friday before Memorial Day serves as the official kickoff of the summer road trip season, and the Squad is here with an eco-friendly road trip tip (try saying that 10 times in a row!).
Nice to see you again, duckie — it’s me, Paper MacKay. Now, paper cups can be a wee bit tricky, but that doesn’t mean they’re outright unrecyclable. Check with your local recycler to see if they accept them before taking your next cup of joe curbside!

Frank here again. If you’ve ever shown up to an event that doesn’t have recycling carts, you know it can be a bit frightening. But don’t fear! I’m here with some tips to help you prepare for this situation.
1. Cry.
2. Reduce the number of disposable items you use.
3. Use a bag or nearby container as a temporary personal recycling cart until you get home or find a drop-off location. (Pour out your recyclables and keep the bag OUT of the recycling cart.)
4. If it’s a small event where you know everyone, take charge! BYOB or designate a spare to serve as the recycling cart and watch the recyclables pour in.
Gladys here! As much as I love the shine of freshly rinsed glass, cookware is not recyclable curbside. Donate it to a local thrift store or dispose of it in your trash bin instead!

Nyla present and ready to watch the new “Devil Wears Paw-da.” But before that, I had the busiest day picking out the perfect color for your recycling cart. Let’s make a fashion statement and become truly groundbreaking together this year. Rinse out your plastic, metal and glass containers before recycling and add a glow to finish out your new look.
Gladys with a quick tour of my den. P.S. The automatic rinser works for glass, metal and plastic containers, so I can get them all rinsed before taking them to my curbside cart. Style, functionality and recycling. It’s quite dazzling really.
5 years of record recycling!! 📢🦝 You read that correctly. This Earth Day marked another year of record-high recycling rates in the state — now 26%.
Of course we had to celebrate in a big way. Way to go Michigan, and keep it up! 🙌

Paint, oil, propane tanks, household cleaners; it may seem like we’re speaking nonsense, but we’re really talking household hazardous waste (HHW)!
HHW items are really anything you’ve purchased that could be harmful to yourself, or the environment, if not disposed of properly. They definitely don’t go in your curbside recycling, but there are options for all of them to be properly recycled or disposed of at community collections or special recycling centers.
