With the unexpected surprising strong news for US jobs and unemployment today, US stocks and precious metals prices were clobbered. Silver' price finally joined platinum and palladium in closing on the COMEX today lower than they were at December 31, 2025. In aftermarket trading, gold is now lower than it closed on the COMEX on December 31, 2025.

At the COMEX close today, gold finished at $4,337.00, silver sank to $68.94, and palladium dropped to $1,247.00. Platinum's close is not yet reported but was latest at $1,778.00.

As of a few minutes ago, here were the bid and ask spot prices at which Liberty Coin Service was calculating its buy and sell prices for physical precious metals products:

Gold: bid spot price $4,311.00/ask spot price $4,316.00
Silver: $67.38/$67.68
Platinum: $1,768.00/$1,778.00
Palladium: $1,217.00/$1,237.00

With these recent lower spot prices, I consider gold and silver to be great buying opportunities. Both markets are technically "oversold," which means that most sellers have been flushed out. In such circumstances, the near term prospects for both metals are for price increases, even though they may possible sink slightly further before the turnaround

Employment Situation Summary - 2026 M05 Results 06/05/2026

Today's jobs and unemployment report was actually more positive than the headlines reported by the regular media. The headline change in the establishment survey was +172,000 jobs. However, you need to adjust this number by subtracting -158,000 jobs double counted in the birth/death adjustment and then adding +93,000 retroactive increase in jobs reported for the prior two months. That nets to +107,000 jobs which is nothing special in a country with a growing population.

However, if you go to Table A-9 for the raw data (meaning not seasonally adjusted) on the number of people who actually held jobs, the number of people who reported holding full-time jobs soared +452,000! From this you need to subtract -336,000 decline in people who only held one part time job and -38,000 decline in people who held two or more jobs. But you also have a gain of +155,000 in self-employed people.

So, the good news is that an unusually large number of people gave up part-time jobs to take full-time jobs. That's a good sign.

To read the Bureau of Labor Statistics news release today, go to https://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm. From there you can scroll to the bottom to click on Table A-9 or do a search for birth/death adjustment.

How did America come to use a decimal monetary system instead of the British pounds, shillings, and pence?
What was decided for the first designs of US coins?
Why did he US government initially prohibit itself from issuing paper money?
Who was Robert Morris and what did he do to support American Independence during key times in the Revolutionary War?

Tomorrow at noon Eastern the US Mint is putting on sale the commemorative copper-nickel half dollar, silver dollar, and gold $5.00 honoring the FIFA World Cup 2026 (soccer in the US and football almost everywhere else in the world).

Prices for numismatic coins sold by the US Mint this year are far higher than they were in prior years and are far higher than the value of the metal content. For the uncirculated/proof versions of the Half Dollar, the discounted introductory price is $61.00 and $64.00, respectively. For the Silver Dollar, the discounted introductory prices are $174.00 and $179.00. The price of the $5.00 Gold isn't yet specified but looks like it might be about 30% above gold value.

Even though there is excitement about the 2026 one-year design circulating coins, we suspect that other numismatic sales will decline sharply at these much higher prices.

The US Dollar Index a couple minutes ago was at 99.54. That is not today's close but it is higher than any close in almost two months when it ended at 99.88 on April 7, 2026.

US stock indices are in negative territory enough today that precious metals prices have been clobbered. At the COMEX closes today gold was at $4,436.75, silver at $73.27, and palladium was $1,317.00. The close for platinum is not yet posted but the latest was $1,869.00.

As of a couple minutes ago here were the bid and ask spot prices at which Liberty Coin Service was calculating its buying and selling prices on physical precious metals:

Gold: bid spot price $4,434.25/ask spot price $4,439.25
Silver: $72.89/$73.19
Platinum: $1,859.00/$1,869.00
Palladium: $1,300.00/$1,320.00

Gold and silver prices are still higher year to date, while platinum and palladium are lower than they were at the end of 2025. We still expect far higher prices for gold and silver by the end of this year.

Although Liberty Coin Service buys and sells foreign currency exchange for most of the world, sometimes political developments temporarily change what we can trade.

While the military actions are underway in the Middle East, our wholesale foreign currency supplier has suspended trading in currencies from Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Consequently, LCS is not purchasing or selling these currencies now. We will advise when this changes.

Keep an eye on US Treasury interest rate yields. Today, the 30-year yield dropped to 4.97%, which was its lowest since it was 4.95% on May 8, 2026. This is still close to the highest rate since early in the Great Recession almost 20 years ago, which had a temporary peak about 2 weeks ago.

The 3-month Treasuries today had a yield of 3.78%, which was its highest since it was 3.81% over six months ago on December 1, 2025.

With too many foreign governments, central banks, and investors either dumping or simply not reinvesting the maturing US Treasury debt they held (about $9 trillion of which matures in 2026), it is inevitable that the US government will be forced to pay ever higher interest rates over the rest of 2026. This ensures that consumer prices will rise and the purchasing power of the US dollar will continue to decline.
