It has taken a moment to post this amazing event because it was such a touching and humbling time. State Trooper Richards reached out to me and told me that a State Trooper died in the line of duty in Traverse City. And that he had never been memorialized. That had to change. So I introduced a bill that passed the House, Senate and was signed by the Governor to rename part of 31 along East Bay as the Trooper James E. Boland Memorial Highway. In 1987, Trooper Boland was doing traffic control in Traverse City during the fireworks that marked the end of the National Governors Association Meeting. A drunk driver hit Trooper Boland and he died from his injuries. The driver was later caught and convicted. We gathered last Thursday with Trooper Boland’s friends and family, including his Trooper family, to honor him and unveil the signs designating the memorial highway. It was very moving to honor this dedicated Trooper.

Terrible news out of the Grawn area in Grand Traverse County. A military F-16 jet has crashed near county road 633. Please avoid the area at this time. The pilot has ejected and has been taken to Munson Medical Center. At this time it appears that no one on the ground was injured. Let’s hope that stays true. The Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Department is working with the military to determine the cause.

Friday night was an exciting night for friends and fireworks. The International Firework Competition featured Canada, Poland and New Zealand lighting up the skies of Grand Traverse County. 5000+ of our friends showed up to watch the display, most seemed to be from outside the area.

Interlochen’s students and staff performed the music show before the event. Great Job by Wendy, Tim and Shea for narrating the show before, during and after.

Twenty-five years later, we continue to remember the lives forever changed on September 11, 2001. May we honor those we lost and the countless heroes who answered the call with courage and selflessness.

The 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks this morning brought back a lot of memories. Everyone alive at that time can remember exactly where they were and how they felt about the tragedy. Beautiful service today and it was a beautiful day, the day of the attacks.

I was working at Crystal Mountain at the time and I can remember getting the news of a small plane hitting the World Trade Center. We rushed to a tv in time to watch the second plane hit the other tower. After that our nation and world changed forever.

So many lives lost and so many courageous people risked their lives to protect this great country. We were united as a nation in that time. It’s sad to see our nation as divided as it is today. We need to get back to working for the good of Americans.

An amazing day for the Labor Day Bridge Walk. Fantastic walk on a great building achievement by skilled workers. I do say the bridge was swaying a lot today with all the people walking across it. Happy Labor Day

Happy Labor Day! I am grateful for the hardworking people who make our district and our communities stronger every day.

I was invited to attend a Kids Food Basket Dinner last week. They supply 11,000 bag meals a day to kids in need. They grow a lot of their own food at gardens in GR and Holland with a new one in Muskegon soon. 250 volunteers donate their time to support this fantastic program. Recently they have received national attention for their work. I have been a supporter in the DHHS budget that I chair.
