MichiganModern is a collaborative effort to celebrate the state's key role in the Modernism movement.
Michigan Modern is a collaborative effort between the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office and those with a passion for modern architecture and design to create a greater appreciation for Modern design in Michigan, reclaim Michigan's rightful place as an international leader in design, and to transform the state's image from the tired cliche of "Rust Belt" to one that recognizes the incredible innovation and design taking place in the state today.

Michigan came THIS close to having a modernist state capitol! The new facility would have complimented the other buildings in the central Capitol Complex which were built in the mid-late 1960s.
We love modernism, but we’re also pretty glad they kept Michigan’s exceptional 1879 state Capitol building instead!

Great news for the study of Michigan Modernism! Nathan Johnson first rose to prominence through his commissions for small Black congregations in Detroit, with his affinity for Modern design becoming a hallmark of his work. Into the 1960s, Johnson’s firm received increasingly larger commissions, including churches, offices, businesses, housing, and more. The GM Tech Center in Warren, formally the General Motors Technical Center, is a designated National Historic Landmark nationally significant American history in the areas of engineering, landscape design, industry, and architecture. Architect Eero Saarinen designed the campus during the height of the Postwar modernism movement including several eye catching features, among them the stainless steel space-age water tower, domed design auditorium, and bold, colorful brickwork on several buildings. Ford Motor Company announced this morning that it intends to move its corporate headquarters out of the famed "Glass House" building at 1 American Road, to a new location not far from Greenfield Village in Dearborn. The iconic Glass House, opened in 1956 with a design by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, will be demolished.

Michigan is home to the only marble Art Deco style lighthouse in the United States! It was designed by noted Detroit architect Albert Kahn, and a can be seen at the east end of Belle Isle Park on the Detroit River!
