Today, I led a group of emerging leaders through an Effective Communication class. One of the skills we discussed was followership.
People aren’t listening to your words—they’re watching your actions. Did you know that your actions are a form of communication?
Whether you’re a CEO following the Board, a VP following the CEO, a manager following a director, or an employee following a team lead—we are all followers.
And the way we follow communicates respect, reliability, and results.
"Great leaders never stop being great followers—because how you follow speaks louder than how you lead."
How have you seen strong followership shape effective leadership?

We live in a noisy world. Everyone has a voice, but not everyone has influence.
Influence isn’t about power, position, or being the loudest in the room. It’s about impact.
It’s the ability to shape perspectives, inspire action, and create lasting change—not through force, but through trust, credibility, and connection.
What Is Influence?
Influence isn’t manipulation or persuasion with an agenda.
True influence is grounded in authenticity, integrity, and relational equity.
It’s the difference between getting compliance and inspiring commitment.
Great leaders don’t just tell people what to do—they inspire people to want to do it.
Why Influence Matters
Whether you’re leading a team, serving clients, parenting kids, or teaching students, influence is the multiplier.
It’s what turns:
• ideas into initiatives
• conversations into change
• relationships into results
To lead well, you must learn to influence effectively.
5 Smart & Savvy Ways to Grow Your Influence
1. Listen to Understand
Influential leaders listen more than they speak. They ask thoughtful questions and make people feel seen and heard.
“Seek first to understand, then to be understood.” – Stephen Covey
2. Lead with Credibility
Do what you say you’ll do. Own your mistakes. Deliver results. Consistency builds credibility—and credibility builds influence.
3. Lead by Lifting Others
Don’t wait for permission to be generous. Share your knowledge. Celebrate wins. Offer support. People are drawn to those who lift them.
4. Show Up with Integrity
People don’t just hear your words—they watch your life. When your actions align with your values, your influence deepens.
5. Invest in Relationships
Influence grows through connection, not control. Strong relationships are the soil where real leadership grows.
You don’t need a title to be influential. You just need to be intentional.
Influence is the heart of lasting leadership. It’s earned over time, shown through action, and felt in your presence.
So the real question isn’t: “Do I have influence?”
It’s: “What kind of influence am I leaving behind?”
Let’s build influence that lasts—one conversation, one connection, one courageous action at a time.

Hello from the training room! It's great to be back!
Today, I’m working with five incredible government supervisors, diving into one of my favorite topics: coaching for performance improvement.
Coaching isn’t about correcting people—it’s about connecting with them. It’s not about blame—it’s about building.
As I reminded the group today:
“Great coaching isn’t about pointing fingers—it’s about pointing people in the right direction, one conversation at a time.”
Let’s lead with empathy. Coach with clarity. And remember—growth happens one honest, caring conversation at a time.

Turbulent times don’t require perfect leaders—they require present ones.
Whether you’re leading a federal agency, a small team, or your own business, the challenges are real: workforce cuts, economic uncertainty, shifting priorities, and daily pressure to do more with less.
But here’s what I’ve learned: You didn’t sign up for easy—you signed up to lead.
You may not control the chaos, but you do control how you show up in it.
Your calm can be someone else’s anchor.
Your consistency can be someone else’s hope.
Your integrity can be someone else’s courage to keep going.
Leadership isn’t about titles but being the steady hand in a storm. So, to those still showing up, still encouraging others, still leading with empathy:
👏 I see you.
🧭 We need you.
💪 Keep going.
