You and your team share a lot of information each day, right? Well, Microsoft are about to make it easier than ever, with a new “Share” button being added to the Windows 11 Start menu and Taskbar.

The new feature will streamline file sharing, letting you send documents, links, or text from your desktop with just a click.

Big fan of Teams? I’ve got good news! Microsoft are rolling out an update that makes it much easier to find people and the content they’ve shared.

When you type someone’s name into Teams, the improved search function will suggest relevant content linked to that person, such as shared files and previous conversations.

Apple Sues over QuickTime - This Day in Tech History 12/06/2024

On this day in 1994, Apple made a bold move by suing the San Francisco Canyon Company.

So, what caused the lawsuit?

Apple claimed that the company helped Intel and Microsoft “borrow” their code from QuickTime for Windows.

Back then, Apple’s QuickTime software was ahead of the game, and Microsoft’s competing Video for Windows software struggled to keep up.

The alleged code-sharing allowed Video for Windows to suddenly match the quality of QuickTime – and that sparked a major lawsuit.

This legal battle was about more than just code; it set the stage for a tech showdown that shaped the entire industry.

The lawsuit eventually led to a settlement between Apple and Microsoft in 1997. Many believe this helped Apple to stay afloat, later transforming the tech landscape with groundbreaking products like the iPhone.

For business owners, it’s a reminder of how protecting intellectual property and forming strategic partnerships can impact your long-term success.

Have you secured what makes your business unique? It could be your most valuable asset.

An AI robot’s painting was just auctioned for more than $1 million 12/05/2024

An AI-generated painting of computer science pioneer Alan Turing recently sold for (brace yourself…) $1.08 million.

Yes… You read that right.

The painting was designed and created by an AI-powered robot called Ai-Da, named after Ada Lovelace. The sale marks a new record for AI-generated art.

The painting is titled “AI God: Portrait of Alan Turing” in celebration of the legendary codebreaker, who shaped modern computing as we know it today.

The art auctioneer, Sotheby’s, had expected it to sell for around $180,000, until the winning bid soared past the million mark.

For business owners, this event is more than just a fun headline – it’s a glimpse into the expanding influence of AI. It shows us that AI could easily come to play a big role in fields that usually rely on human creativity.

The sale of the painting opens up exciting possibilities for AI in terms of innovation, process automation, and even product design. And if AI can break into the world of fine art, who knows what it could bring to the business world?!

How do you think AI could help your business?

Windows 11’s latest update might finally make choosing default apps easier (looking at you, Edge) 12/04/2024

I bring great news for Windows 11 fans: Microsoft are updating how you choose your default apps.

The update makes it easier to pick the apps you prefer to use for opening files or sharing links, even if they’re not made by Microsoft.

Why is this a big deal for businesses?

Businesses often rely on specific tools to support their daily workflow. For example, you might prefer to use Chrome for browsing, or a non-Microsoft app for viewing PDFs. The update gives you more control, allowing you and your team to use whichever software you’re most comfortable with.

In the past, Microsoft have been criticized for pushing people towards their own apps, such as the Edge browser. They’ve previously made it difficult to set other apps as defaults – but with the update, it seems like they’re listening to feedback.

Windows 11 is all about making tech work for you. Hopefully, this new feature will help to make your workflow more efficient.

Hackers Can Hijack Your MFA Enabled Email Accounts By Stealing Cookies 12/03/2024

We all know that using multi-factor authentication (MFA) is a good way to help keep your business data secure, right? It adds an extra layer of security to your accounts, as you need your password AND a code to log in.

Well, here’s some worrying news: Cyber criminals have recently been finding ways to get around MFA.

How are they doing it?

When you log in to your email, a session cookie gets created and saved in your browser. This makes it easy to stay logged in without having to re-enter your password.

Scammers are now stealing these cookies to get around security measures. This could mean your accounts are at risk, even with MFA enabled.

If cyber criminals get into your accounts, they could access sensitive data and use it for identity theft or phishing attacks (where they use fake emails to trick you into sharing information).

To help keep your business protected, make sure you’re using strong security software. Always keep devices and software updated, and log out of important accounts when they’re not in use.

Another tip? Don’t use the “remember me” option on shared or public computers, and only interact with secure websites that have a “HTTPS” address.

Does your team need a refresher on cyber security awareness? We can help with that. Get in touch.
