Today, staff completed the third session of training led by nationally recognized instructor Dr. Heather Pfeifer of Azimuth Unlimited. The training, titled “The Struggle Is Real: How to Build Resilience and Optimize Wellness Through Stress Management Techniques,” focused on equipping first responders with practical tools to strengthen resilience and support overall wellness.

Fire Chief Scott Little emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating: “Having labor and management working together to find ways to support mental, physical, and emotional wellness is essential to ensuring our team performs at its highest level each day. I can’t thank Local 5423 President Ryan Gardill enough for his leadership and commitment to helping firefighters address these challenging and often difficult conversations. His efforts continue to encourage staff to call a ‘time out’ when needed, realign, and understand that it’s okay to ask for help.

Manheim Township Fire Rescue is committed to fostering a culture that prioritizes the health, wellness, and resilience of its personnel, ensuring they are prepared to serve the community while taking care of themselves and one another.

Manheim Township Fire Rescue is proud to recognize Firefighter Stephen Martin as this month’s Behind the Badge honoree, honoring his exceptional commitment, service, and dedication to protecting our community.

When did you join MTFR?
I joined MT Fire Rescue in January 2026.

One goal you’ve reached so far at MTFR?
I have started the driver's training process, with the goal of becoming a qualified driver/operator for both the engine and tanker this year.

What advice would you give to someone interested in joining MTFR?
When you join a fire department, you are joining a team, so my advice to anyone interested in joining MTFR is to focus on being a good teammate. Work hard alongside the men and women in the department to get the job done, do your best in every area from cleanup to trainings, to responding to incidents, and you will discover the camaraderie and satisfaction that makes this the best job in the world.

What’s something you’d like to share with the community?
When I'm not at work, I spend my time either with my beautiful wife and 3-year-old son or working on cars with my dad at his shop.

We’re deeply grateful to Eden Resort & Suites for their continued partnership in recognizing the outstanding members of MTFR. Their generosity allows us to honor the dedication, professionalism, and service of our first responders each and every month.

MTFR’s leadership development continues to grow as Fire Captain Geoffrey Miller graduated from the 2026 Leadership Lancaster Core Program during a ceremony held last evening at the Eden Resort.

Leadership Lancaster has played an important role in developing leaders within MTFR by strengthening skills that provide long-term benefits to both the organization and the community. This aligns with Leadership Lancaster’s mission to activate people to lead with purpose and integrity, creating lasting positive change throughout the community.

Previous MTFR graduates of the Leadership Lancaster program include Fire Chief Scott Little, Fire Captains Christopher Wertz, Daniel Bezek, and Daniel Wagaman.

Congratulations to Captain Miller on this outstanding accomplishment and continued commitment to leadership and service!

Today, MTFR leadership (Assistant Chief Chris Krichten and Captain Chris Wertz) took part in the Star of Life Ceremony at the State Capitol Rotunda, honoring long-serving EMS providers from across Pennsylvania. The event was sponsored by UPMC, and MTFR staff had the opportunity to meet with Dr. Dan Bledsoe (Pennsylvania EMS Director) and Steven Lyle (Retired Executive Director of the Emergency Health Services Federation).

Assistant Chief Krichten stated, “It is our privilege to support and recognize EMS providers who have dedicated so many years of service to the betterment of others and their well-being.”

Delivery day at MTFR! 🚑

Not too often you can say a tractor trailer showed up loaded with brand new, state-of-the-art ALS and BLS equipment — but here at MTFR, we can say it happens.

This delivery represents more than equipment. It’s the foundation for building the highest standard of municipally backed EMS delivery in Lancaster County. The future of EMS at MTFR is just getting started.

The application period will close on Friday, May 29 at 4 PM.
