Yesterday warmed our history loving hearts as the LMC Assembly held a hymnsing led by Stumptown Mennonite Church. They used the old red hymnals and busted out some 606.

This year, as the United States commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Mennonite Life continues to feature often-untold stories of migration, political dissent, service, and faith and to identify how voices from local communities have shaped the nation’s character.
Before the American Revolutionary War, Mennonites were actively involved in the voting process and served in many local offices themselves. The lingering effects of Mennonites’ refusal to abide by the Revolutionary War-era Test Act that required Pennsylvanians to swear an oath of loyalty left many Mennonites unable to vote well into the 1790s.
This propaganda broadside from the 1800 election, titled “To the Freemen of Lancaster County” appears to present a different opinion on the matter of Mennonite citizenship. It encourages county residents to vote for the Federalist party, stating that if they don’t and the Democrat-Republican candidate for judge takes office, “Menonists, Tunkers, and Quakers” could lose their rights of citizenship.

When writing his recent memoir, retired Lancaster Mennonite Conference Bishop Freeman Miller reached out to Mennonite Life to see if we had audio recordings of his time performing in a mock trial as Michael Sattler from Eastern Mennonite Seminary. Needless to say, we did. Archiving these memories is how we continue to tell these stories today.
(You can listen to the audio recordings of the trial below)

We would like to acknowledge our fearless and dedicated volunteer Lloyd Zeager. After completing Voluntary Service in Washington DC, he set out to major in History at Goshen College. He was recruited by the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society and has been with us ever since, on staff for 50 years and now a volunteer. He is often found sorting books for the Book Auctions and Bookworm Frolic. His laugh is unmistakable and is a treasure of knowledge. Thank you Lloyd, for 50 wonderful years!
