Drowning doesn’t look like it does in the movies. There’s no splashing, no yelling for help—it’s fast, it’s silent, and it can happen in as little as 20–60 seconds.

The American Red Cross reports that for every child who dies from drowning, another 7 are treated in the emergency room, with 40% requiring hospitalization for severe injuries. That’s why designating a “Water Watcher” is so critical: a specific adult whose only job is to watch the water, free from phones and distractions, until the next watcher takes over.
