To address some FAQs regarding fire restrictions (we know it's confusing!):
Sheriff-Issued County-Wide Burn Ban:
- When the Park County Sheriff's Office issues county-wide fire restrictions, the U.S. Forest Service - PSICC National Forest and all fire protection districts must comply.
-The decision to go into a county-wide ban is made by the sheriff, as he is the Fire Warden for the county, in consultation with the fire chiefs, the Forest Service, and the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control based on fuels moisture levels, weather patterns, and other factors.
Forest Service Fire Restrictions:
- USFS fire restrictions only apply to the national forest public lands, not private property located within national forest boundaries.
- If an individual fire protection district chief decides to impose a burn ban in their district, those restrictions ONLY apply to private land within the district, NOT Forest Service public lands.
Red Flag Warning:
- When the US National Weather Service Denver/Boulder Colorado issues a Red Flag Warning for any part of Park County, the entire county automatically goes into Stage II Fire Restrictions. The Forest Service does NOT need to comply in this case, because it is not a sheriff-issued ban.
We are working to post this information to our website and will make an announcement when it is up. If you have unanswered questions about fire restrictions in the county, please put them in the comments below and we will make sure to include them in the webpage.
