MONSTER: The textbook 'buzz saw' appearance of Melissa tells me that it is still strengthening, as cloud-tops continue to cool in the bands that are wrapping around the center. The latest update from the NHC has winds of 175 mph with gusts more than 200 mph. This is almost the maximum that we think tropical systems can reach - there will be fluctuations in the intensity between now and landfall as the eyewall goes through cycles of replacing itself. Either way, this will be a devastating strike on the west side of Jamaica.

Here's a snapshot of our FutureCast at 2 AM ET on Wednesday morning. A line of storms will be weakening as it rolls through, but it still may contain pockets of gusty or perhaps even damaging winds when they initially enter the Chattahoochee Valley. We'll continue to keep an eye on these for you - we've hoisted the 'alert day' for the overnight hours to keep track of the threat, but things will not be as severe as up in parts of north Alabama and northwest Georgia. See the full FutureCast on the WTVM weather app and join Tyler on the TV side at 5 AM ET with more on the forecast! -DK
