Fun math and science for children! After-school classes and summer camps in Lafayette, CA.
10/04/2026
Hello Lamorinda Families!
We invite all young scientists and engineers to join us for our after-school, hands-on Math and Physics classes! The second Fall session at our new downtown Lafayette location begins tomorrow!
First of all, we want to thank all of you who trusted us with your kids’ time and joined us for our first Fall session after-school classes! We hope they enjoyed our hands-on math and physics classes as much as we did! It is wonderful to see children's curiosity and creativity, and we feel so privileged to help them grow their skills and confidence.
Five weeks went by so quickly—it’s hard to believe it’s October already! That means our second Fall session starts this coming week!
Our Math Playtime and Physics Playground Makerspace classes for elementary school children are gaining popularity, and we are so happy that more families are joining us! For our returning students, we will be building on the skills they mastered in the first session. However, our classes are designed so that new kids can join at any time without feeling like they are behind. It’s never too late to start a learning journey, and it never has to stop!
We would also like to highlight our new offerings:
Family Free Build (Fridays, 3:30 PM – 6:00 PM)
Drop in with your children on Friday afternoons to work together on school projects, arts and crafts, custom toys, or holiday decorations! Enjoy making something creative and unique in the company of like-minded folks!
Team Spontaneous Challenge Training
Attention to coaches of all youth STEM teams! If you are preparing your team for a competition, or simply would like the kids to practice rapid problem solving and build cooperative skills, please come check out our hands-on technical and verbal challenges!

A parent asked us a fantastic question. How do we teach a group with a few years’ age gap? It gets right to the heart of why we built our program the way we did.
Even within a single age group, every child comes in with a unique set of skills, abilities and motivation to learn. Traditional school settings often have to adjust to the average or lower level to ensure no one is left behind. Unfortunately, that often leaves advanced or eager kids stuck with "busy work."
Our approach is completely different. We use a "low threshold, high ceiling" philosophy, opening topics with logical puzzles, and engaging discussions that don't require students to have special prior knowledge to participate. This lets us see how familiar the students are with the topics and how willing they are to explore it further. If a student is motivated but needs extra support, we provide one-on-one help or form a mini-group with a second teacher so they can catch up. If anyone feels tired or needs time to process what they’ve learned, they can freely switch to math board games, spatial puzzles, origami, pattern making, or reading STEM books. Kids don’t have to “perform”, we have no tests or worksheets except when students specifically ask to test their new skills! Of course then we happily oblige.
We structure our classes much like a gifted program—even though we don't require giftedness. We respect kids' intelligence, let them regulate their learning flow, and familiarize them with advanced concepts so they walk into middle school, high school, and college completely unintimidated. Time after time, our students impress us with how far they go when their curiosity is ignited without pressure!
Spanning the age gap in physics might be even easier because our focus is on hands-on building, from structures and vehicles to siege machines and electrical circuits. The live demonstrations and builds captivate kids of all ages. Younger students absorb the practical, intuitive mechanics of how things work, while older students get to dive deeper into the physics laws and more detailed technical explanations behind their creations. Younger kids take in as much as they are ready for, while older kids get challenged to optimize their designs. Everyone learns real physics, both practically and conceptually, at a pace that feels exciting to them. In kids' projects, engineering often merges with artistic expression, and we love supporting their creativity just as much as helping them with the technical side of design!
We strive to never hold children back, making sure everyone feels supported in their unique learning journey with us. When kids are motivated to learn, they are unstoppable!

ANNOUNCEMENT: PHYSICS PLAYGROUND CAMP NEXT WEEK IS RELOCATED!
Summer power outages are like bad weather – can't do anything about them! We just learned that PG&E scheduled their maintenance work and power outage at School St. right in the middle of our Physics Playground camp. Not cool, literally – to leave the kids without AC on a hot summer day!
Thankfully, the wonderful Lafayette Parks & Rec team came to the rescue. At the very last moment, they found us a space at the Lafayette Community Center! We are so excited to be back at LCC. We love the building, the great playground for the breaks, and the beautiful shady area outside!
Finding out about a planned power outage just a few days before camp was a bit worrisome, but it might just be a blessing in disguise.
Please join us next week for Physics Playground camp, the week of “Mechanical Wonders” at the Lafayette Community Center, West Madrone room! We still have a few spots left in the group, and would love to include more young engineers and scientists!
We have prepared many exciting hands-on activities and projects for our campers – the glue guns are ready, and the beautiful room is fully powered. All we need is your kids' creativity and curiosity!
Since the event is hosted through Lafayette Parks and Recreation, please register at their website – the link is in the comments.
Another glimpse into our classrooms from Lafayette Recreation! Grab a spot for your kids at our creative summer camps! One week left to sign up!
