Pippen!
We're wrapping up day three of VBS. The mornings are super full. Sneaking in another character of the fellowship.
Dreaming of that nice crispy bacon...

A few more images from my time in Armand Serrano's environmental mentorship. There was a strong emphasis on using 3D tools to support rapid asset creation and future flexibility.
While the prior image was a piece of mood/key art, this second series was to build a functioning environment that could potentially support multiple scenes. Key art could be imagined from many angles here.
Some very primitive sculpting in Nomad for the ground structure, a few assets procured from Sketchfab, mainly the Mark 1 tank, and then line art overlay for detail and to unify elements. The final round was color + callouts.
This angle was referred to in critique as the 'Polly Pocket' view, which was just so funny to me. Growing up in the era of Micro Machines and Stephen Biesty's Cross-Sections books, I can see all the influence coming through.

Images from an online mentorship course with this past spring. A really fun opportunity to glean from one of the industry's greats.
These images were generated from a prompt among a selection of options. I chose one from WWI, namely the British at the Somme in 1916.
A great cohort of talented students from all over the world and all seasons of life.
A lot of things needed to align to make it all work. Grateful for the Lord's provision. Thanks to my wife for letting me sleep in a little the following morning as well :-)
Thanks again, Armand!

Nearing the end of term. The student's work output is incredible.
Here is an in-class demo: a paint-over of a hilariously bad maquette. Even rough as it is, there are great shapes of light and shadow that can be mined from the reference.
My TA said it kind of looked like a dinosaur, so we ran with that. Some kind of elderly reptilian king.

Once again, my daughter Evy gets her top film pick—Avatar.
Thank you again Lodge Design, for your efforts in putting on the show.
It is a real treat to get a night out with my wife and have a great event to reconnect with dear friends, colleagues, and former students who have moved on to bring their own special voices into the world.

I recently learned about a prompt called , and I just love the idea.
I'm using it as an excuse to pull some more tractor bots from the archives. Midwest Sci-Fi lives on 🙂
Thanks, , for such a fun idea.
*and thanks to for bringing it to my attention. (Check out his astoundingly cool hard-surface modeling of machines)
