Sad to report that Harold Gifford, an extraordinary American, imbued with courage and grit, passed away at the age of 99. Harold recounted his life story and the "miracle landing" as he safely piloted the team plane carrying the Minnesota Lakers basketball team during a snowstorm in January, 1960 in his book published by Signalman. Rest in Peace, Harold. We have the watch.

So sorry to announce the passing of Signalman author Walt Breede.
Walt was a Naval Academy graduate, retired Marine, Vietnam veteran, math teacher and prolific writer of non-fiction thrillers. But more than that, he was a great American and wonderful human being. We will miss him.

Did You Think No One Would Even Care!
(A tribute to George Floyd and many that’s gone before him)

Did you think no one would even care,

As bystanders cried out to you as you just smugly stared,

Was it because of the color of this mans skin,

Or did you believe you could just do the same thing time and time agin,

As you robed this man from the only thing on this earth that’s truly free,

To take a breath as we all must do to live..like you and me,

Many eyes were fixed in horror as their hearts beat in their chest,

As they wondered why you wouldn’t move your knee off of this man’s neck,

Did you think that other people that look just like you would just ignore what you did,

And like so many other times in the past your actions would just stay hid,

And the other offices that just stood around as though they had no voice,

Will now get to face their inactions as they sit in jail remembering their wrong choice,

George Floyd did not get a chance to rise up from his suffocation,

But what you did has caused a rise in this whole nation,

People didn’t just see a black man on the ground but they saw a knee on their freedom to breathe’

Peaceful protesting was the way they all said enough is enough and we must stand as one to succeed.

God breathed into man and he became a living soul.

To have justice prevail we all have to play a role,

Teach your children your grandchildren, and as many as you can,

That there’s room around the throne of God for every shade of man,

When God breathed the breath of life in us He didn’t do it according to our race,

So let’s stand together as one nation under God with liberty and justice for everyone in every place.

When the protesting is over and there is no one else walking from block to block,

Do your part in this great change and head for the voting box.

Signalman author Harold Gifford (just turned 96!) was visiting family in Tampa when he fell ill and had to be hospitalized. He is now on the mend in rehab and should be able to get back home to the Twin Cities by Christmas. But it provided an opportunity for me to visit and catch up which was a real treat. Harold is a great story teller and has so many more fascinating life experiences beyond even his legendary actions saving the Minneapolis Lakers in 1960.
