The Project Palm Interview

"You want a coco de mer? All right. Anders, give him a Coco de Mer."

After years of polite refusals and dead ends in his search for the legendary 🌴 Coco de Mer, Pierre-Olivier Albano traveled to Thailand to visit the remarkable collections of Nongnooch Garden Pattaya.

After spending the day with owner Kampon Tansacha and renowned palm expert Anders Lindström, the conversation took an unforgettable turn.

For any palm enthusiast, it's the kind of moment you dream about—a chance encounter, a shared passion, and the realization that persistence sometimes opens doors you never expected.

If you'd like to read how one of the world's most coveted seeds came to Palmétum de Guyane, the full interview is available now in the Project Palm Blog.

Asterogyne martiana
Houndstooth Palm

🌴 Not all palms are towering trees.

Some, like this species, spend their lives in the shaded understory of tropical forests, where broad, beautifully textured leaves help them capture every bit of available light.

While many palms are admired for their trunks or overall size, this species earns attention for something else entirely—its foliage. Thank you Erich Vonunruh for sharing this incredible specimen from his personal collection!

What do you think?

👇 Does this palm have one of the most beautiful leaves in the palm world, or is there another species that gets your vote?

And for those lucky enough to grow Asterogyne martiana, we'd love to see photos of newly emerging leaves. The fresh growth on this species can be especially striking, and we're always looking to showcase member-grown palms from around the world.

Share your favorite palm species—or your photos—in the comments! Better yet, consider visiting our website to upload your photos.

Native to India and Sri Lanka, this diminutive palm is among the smallest members of its genus and often grows in dry, rocky habitats where larger palms might struggle.

Washingtonia robusta
Mexican Fan Palm

🌴 Yes or no?

Few palms spark stronger opinions than this species! For some, nothing says "vacation" quite like a skyline lined with towering fan palms. Others prefer slower-growing species with broader crowns, colorful crownshafts, or more tropical foliage.

No matter where you stand, there's no denying the impact these giants can have on a landscape. Thanks so much to for sharing this photo with us. All palm photos on our website have been contributed by our members.
