If an engine fails due to a loss of oil, a technician will need to do a lot of work to get it going again. Chances are, a lot of internal components will have to be replaced as the extreme heat generated may have already fused parts together.

When removing components from an engine, a tech will need to arrange everything so that individual parts go back to their original locations. Connecting rods and pistons, in particular, should be returned to their original placements because they’re already bedded-in with the components they connect to.

If an engine overheats badly and fails, one of the components that will need to be thoroughly inspected would be the engine block. Cracks, in particular, are something to look out for because this will mean that the integrity of the component has been compromised.

If you have a valuable classic car or truck with a broken but numbers-matching engine, you may want to hold off replacing the motor. Instead, you can send it off to be rebuilt so the originality of the vehicle can be preserved.

A worn cylinder block will need to go through a lot of machining so it can be used again. The cylinders, in particular, will need to be honed, or in some cases, re-bored so that a good seal can be achieved once the pistons and piston rings are installed.

While there are a lot of videos on engine rebuilding available online, this doesn’t mean you should attempt it. After all, a lot of experience, skill, and special tools are needed for the job, so you should not proceed unless you really know what you’re doing.

When tearing down an engine, among the first things that the technician will inspect are the cylinder bores. Ideally, the surfaces of the bores will be smooth and blemish-free so any scoring or gouges on it will suggest excessive wear.

Engine rebuilding is a difficult task that requires a lot of precision. Engine bolts, for instance, can’t just be tightened by feel. Instead, they will need to be tightened to specific tolerances with a torque wrench to ensure that they do not fail.

Before a tech can start rebuilding an engine, he or she will need to make sure that everything is clean. The engine block, in particular, will need to be washed thoroughly inside and out so that any defects that are hidden by grime will be exposed.

Having your engine taken apart and rebuilt is certainly not something you do often. As such, you may want to take the opportunity to get hard-to-access consumable parts replaced. After all, you will need to replace them eventually, so what better time than when the engine is out of the vehicle?

When working on an engine with broken valves, the rebuilder will want to take a close look at the top surfaces of the pistons. Any marks or gouges on them will mean there was a collision between the pistons and valves, thus pointing towards a failure of the timing belt or chain.

While seemingly insignificant, gaskets are among the most critical parts of an engine. Cylinder head gaskets, in particular, are vital to the proper functioning of a motor as a faulty one will result in a loss of compression and will allow coolant to mix in with the engine oil.
