What do you see? Spoons or forks?
Once again, it's time for our annual Persimmon Seed forecast!
According to the East Tennessee tradition, you can forecast the coming winter by splitting open a seed from a ripe persimmon. If the embryo tree inside looks like a knife, it will be "cold cutting winds" all winter - cold but dry. If it's shaped like a spoon, it will "spoon down" lots of snow on you. And if it's shaped like a fork or dinner plate, it will be "mild enough to eat dinner outdoors" this winter.
We're beginning to find a few ripe persimmons here at the park. So take a look, and tell us - do you see spoons or forks?
By the way, did you know that today (3rd Thursday in September) is named for another native tree fruit? Yes, it's National PawPaw day!

Although Kingsport has put a “pause” on its curbside recycling program, we can all continue to recycle by dropping off recyclable materials at one of the area’s recycling convenience centers. Here is a list of centers accepting recyclable material:
Recycling Drop Off Sites, accepting mixed paper, magazines, cardboard, aluminum and tin cans:
• 609 Industry Drive (across from the Wastewater Plant)
• 101 Lakecrest Drive (in Colonial Heights near Ingles)
• Sullivan Gardens School
• Indian Springs School
• Blountville Middle School Football Field (1651 State Highway 37)
• Holston Valley Middle School Football Field (1717 Bristol Cavern Highway)
• Piney Flats Food City (5970 Highway 11E)
• Indian Springs Elementary School (333 Hill Road)
• Sullivan Middle School (4154 Sullivan Gardens Drive)
• Northeast State Community College
Transfer Stations:
• 1921 Brookside Lane (at the City’s landfill)
• 804 Raytheon Road, Bristol
These transfer stations accept mixed paper, magazines, cardboard, aluminum, tin cans, propane tanks, used oil, anti-freeze, batteries, appliances and electronics (computers, keyboards, games and televisions), and household garbage. Latex paint can be dried and placed with regular garbage (latex paint must be completely dry upon disposal). Oil-based paint is accepted at both stations, and is not required to be dry upon drop off.

Thank you KCS! ❤️
UPDATE (3.18.20): Starting tomorrow, March 19th, we are adding additional bus delivery of free meals throughout our community. We'll now actually be running all of our regular bus routes during both breakfast and lunch loaded up with free meals for any child age 18 or under that would like one.
ATTN Kingsport City Schools Families: We wanted to provide you some important information regarding the feeding program that KCS will be offering during our school closure. FREE BREAKFAST and FREE LUNCH for children 18 and under will be available at most school locations and will be delivered by buses on all days we are closed for COVID-19 (Coronavirus), other than Spring Break, when federal regulations prevent us from doing that. One meal will be given per child, who does not need to be a KCS student. Please visit our website www.k12k.com for additional details.
