If you really want to help people at scale, start with one.

Help one justice-involved individual find a job and you’ll quickly realize it’s not as simple as just sending them to a second chance employer. There are transportation issues, housing issues, court dates, fines, child support, old environments, and a dozen other barriers most people never see.

Mentor one at-risk high school student and you’ll realize some of their daily worries are bigger than most adults’ hardest days. It’s hard to focus on graduation when you’re not sure whose house you’re sleeping at that night.

Help one person who has a job but no reliable transportation in a county with no public transit and you’ll understand how fragile employment can be for some people.

If you really want to make an impact with the population you’re trying to serve, start with one person and walk with them through the entire workforce journey — job search, transportation, housing, childcare, budgeting, all of it.

When you experience all the barriers up close, you build better programs, better partnerships, and better solutions for people at scale.

Impact is greater than intent. Always.

We continue our weekly PSA's (Public Service Announcements) of what to say and what not to say to someone in recovery.

Sometimes well-meaning phrases can sometimes sound dismissive, judgmental, or invalidating.

When speaking with someone in recovery, choose words that encourage rather than discourage. Addiction is complex, and not just a "lack of willpower".

As Christians we should avoid comments such as:

“Why can’t you just stop?”
“I know exactly how you feel.”
“Are you sure you have a problem?”
“You don’t look like an addict/alcoholic.”

These statements can minimize struggles, create guilt, or undermine someone's recovery journey.

Instead, offer support and encouragement:

“I’m really proud of you.”

“I’m here for you. How can I support you today?”

“It’s so good to see you.”

A few thoughtful words can make a meaningful difference in someone’s recovery. Choose compassion, understanding, and support.

Recovery is a lifelong, day-by-day sometimes moment-by-moment journey rather than a final destination.

Whatever the struggle, whatever the challenge, there is help, healing, strength, peace, and support in the family of God.

Let's be a part of the solution and not part of the problem…

We continue our weekly PSA's (Public Service Announcements) of what to say and what not to say to someone in recovery.

Sometimes well-meaning phrases can sometimes sound dismissive, judgmental, or invalidating.

To offer truly supportive and compassionate, Christian encouragement, avoid these common statements listed below.

"Don't you have enough faith?" or "Just pray about it."

Why it hurts: Implying that addiction, mental health struggles or relapse is merely a lack of faith or unconfessed sin minimizes the clinical and physical nature of addiction and the journey of recovery.

Things that are said thoughtlessly can create immense, unnecessary spiritual guilt.

"God won't give you more than you can handle."

Why it hurts: People often use this phrase as an encouraging cliché, but it is not found in the Bible.

It can make those who are actively struggling feel like they are failing God or are somehow "too weak".

Recovery is a lifelong, day-by-day sometimes moment-by-moment journey rather than a final destination.

Better Ways to Offer Support:

"I am so proud of the work you are putting in today." This focuses on their active efforts and daily choices.

"How can I best support you right now?" Shows you want to walk alongside them without imposing your own solutions.

"I am praying for your continued strength and peace." Reassures them of your care without demanding that they "perform" spiritually.

Whatever the struggle, whatever the challenge, there is help, healing, strength, peace, and support in the family of God.

Let's be a part of the solution and not part of the problem…
