This Christmas, I wish for you love and peace.
While living in Portugal I came to understand the meaning of the word saudade. The literal translation is, a deep state of melancholic longing for a person or thing that is absent. The emotional translation is much more. It’s not a feeling of sadness. It’s a loving longing, a sentimental ache. A moment to cherish that which touches your soul. At times with a tear and at others a smile. The holidays are a season I feel saudade most profoundly. Reflecting on friends far away and remembering moments with those who have passed on before me. It’s the visions of places I’ve traveled that has changed my life forever. And on occasion, it’s the musing over the ones who have broken my heart or spirit. That’s saudade. This holiday season, know that I am thinking of you and feeling saudade.
