In THE TENDERFOOT (1932) Calvin Jones (Joe E. Brown) leaves Texas to invest in a Broadway play – upon arrival he mistakes a group of “pansies” in costume for cowboys. This scene reflects the “Pansy Craze” of the 1930s in which pansy characters were popularized on stage and screen by both gay and straight actors. These q***r characters pop up quite often during Hollywood’s Pre-Code era – they weren’t censored until 1934. Pansy/sissy characters were often placed in western films because their effeminate nature was meant to stand in contrast to that of the butch cowboys. They were generally used for humour, but you can’t help appreciate how unapologetically q***r they are.
