Last week, MarineLab joined the Fish & Friends event at the Ocean Exploration Center as their guest speaker! 🀩

Our Director of Operations, Rachel, shared a presentation on the impact outdoor education can have on ocean conservation and how meaningful experiences in the field can help students better understand the marine environments around them πŸ€ΏπŸ”¬πŸŸ

We also brought along a few critters for guests to see up close, giving everyone a chance to connect with some of the small but important animals that call these habitats home.

Thank you to REEF Reef Environmental Education Foundation for having us. We loved being part of the conversation and sharing a little piece of MarineLab with the community! πŸ’™

What looks like a simple piece of Gonio is actually home to an incredible variety of marine life πŸ¦€πŸšπŸ™βοΈ

During summer camp, campers headed out to Rodriguez Key to collect Gonio and break it apart back on the boat.

As they looked through each piece, they found small animals using it as habitat, including crabs, shrimp, brittle stars, and tiny shells.

This activity gave campers a firsthand look at the animals that call this habitat home! 😎

A new museum exhibit is surfacing at MarineLab Undersea Park! πŸ€ΏπŸ˜ŽπŸ”¬

Our newest exhibit, Living & Working in the Sea: The Legacy of Ian Koblick, celebrates Ian Koblick’s remarkable history with underwater habitats, marine technology, and undersea exploration.

His work played a major role in bringing Jules’ Undersea Lab to Key Largo, helping make it one of the area’s most recognizable pieces of undersea history.

Join us for the exhibit opening, meet Ian Koblick, and learn more about his lasting impact on MarineLab, Jules’ Undersea Lab, and undersea innovation in the Florida Keys 🀩

Today is World Oceans Day! 🌎🌊🀩

A day to celebrate the ocean that shapes our planet, supports life, and gives us so much to keep learning from.

At MarineLab, we see that every day in the seagrass, on the reef, in the mangroves, and in the moments students stop to look a little closer.

Today, we’re celebrating the ocean that connects us all and reminds us why marine education matters πŸ’™

A rare moment on our Nest Key field trip 😲
During one of our seining activities, students carefully pulled in their net and found a couple of seahorses inside, and one of them was pregnant. While we were observing, he gave birth right in front of us!
Β
Seahorses are unique because the males carry the eggs in a brood pouch until the babies, called fry, are ready to be released. Seining gives students a closer look at the animals living in shallow-water habitats while teaching them how to observe marine life safely and responsibly.
Β
Getting to witness something like this up close is such a special reminder of how amazing these animals are and how much there is to learn about the ecosystems around us.
Β

⭐️ These seahorses were only with us for a quick observation before being carefully returned to the sea, as part of our effort to teach marine science through real-world experiences πŸ˜ƒ
