How do we know if our South Florida beaches are toxin-free and safe for swimming?
We don’t in Miami-Dade and Broward counties.
By the time the red flags go up by the lifeguard stand, ocean waters may have been contaminated with f***l matter for days.

How do we know if our beaches are p**p-free and safe for swimming? We don’t | Opinion Finding excessive levels of f***l bacteria in South Florida beach waters is becoming too commonplace. Yet Miami-Dade and Broward counties take too long to report testing results to the public. That must change.

‘The situation is precarious.’ Sewage continues to spill after bypass attempt fails Five days after a leaking pipe was discovered under the Oleta River, Miami-Dade still hasn’t figured out how to stop the raw sewage spill and crews are struggling to complete a bypass pipe.

Now, both of Key Biscayne’s Crandon beaches have too much p**p for swimming Key Biscayne’s Crandon North Beach was put under a swimming advisory for too much bacteria that indicates f***l matter, which is the same reason Crandon South Beach has been under an advisory since Friday.

WATER QUALITY ALERT: A contractor hit a sewer main at Fifth Street and Michigan Avenue in City of Miami Beach, which caused a sewage leak and very high bacteria levels in the surrounding area. Please avoid contact with the water around the south end of Miami Beach, both on the Bay and beach sides. The City has issued a no swim advisory beach areas in the vicinity of First Street through Fifth Street and for the area of Biscayne Bay from South Pointe Drive to 14 Street. These alerts are in addition to closures at North Miami Beach, Haulover, and Crandon beaches also reported this week. We will continue to update you as new information becomes available. The Biscayne Nature Center invites you to join our fin-tastic celebration to raise awareness for clean, beautiful oceans! The Mermaid Parade will be the grand finale of our day-long "EarthStravaganza!" festival in honor of Earth Day (9 am- 4 pm).
If you wish to simply view the parade, join us at the BNC Festival Eco-Village and then assemble along the beach promenade. Free admission and free parking in the lot near the BNC.
If you wish to march in the parade, we encourage you to create a handmade costume that expresses your personal vision for healthy oceans. Let your imagination go wild and strut your stuff, but please be advised that motorized vehicles are not allowed on the parade route along Crandon Beach.
$5 entry fee to march in parade. See payment link in confirmation message. Scholarships are available for low-income residents. Send email to [email protected] for details.

Nearly all the seagrass in Biscayne Bay is dead. County commissioners want to know why. Miami-Dade County commissioners agreed Tuesday to create a task force to tackle Biscayne Bay pollution blamed for killing more than 25,000 acres of seagrass, habitat for lobster, stone crabs and sportfish.
