Our KAP kids have something they want you to hear.

Over the last few weeks, our middle schoolers recorded a series of short messages about screens and social media. Not the usual "put your phone down" lecture. These dig into the brain science, why our brains respond to screens and social media the way they do, and practical tips for building healthier habits.

Listen to the first three here, and pass them along to anyone who could use them: kapalaska.com/unplugged-summer

The scripts come from Dr. Crystal Collier at KnowYourNeuro.org, but it's KAP kids doing the talking, in their own voices. There's something powerful about hearing it straight from them. They're the ones living it.

One has a video, two are audio, and each runs exactly two minutes. You'll also start hearing them on rotation at KRBD, so keep an ear out for our kids on the airwaves.

This is all part of Unplugged Summer, our campaign to get Ketchikan's kids outside this season with fishing, hikes, life skills, and cultural learning. We're working toward a $35,000 goal (and we've already raised $14,643). If you'd like to chip in, you can give at kapalaska.com/unplugged.

The Alaska Afterschool Network just shared this info about summer programming in their latest e-newsletter.

We know that there is a critical shortage of affordable summer programming available for our kids here in Ketchikan. They grow up in the incredible beauty and bounty of our island, but too many of them are stuck inside during the best parts of the year.

That's why KAP offers our summer program completely free of charge. We believe that learning how to fish, going on hikes, and engaging in the arts should be available to all kids, and we want to do our part.

This school year, more than 300 youth in 6th through 9th grade stopped by our afterschool drop-in center. This summer, we are only able to serve about 70 kids. We had to shut down registration for summer after just a few days, and the waitlist for spots that might open up continues to grow.

This week, we're launching an awareness campaign called "Unplugged Summer" to support KAP's programming. Our kids have been working on recording awareness messages about the dangers of overusing devices and social media over the last few weeks, and the messages will start playing on the radio soon. We'll be sharing them here on our page as well.

All of the work that we do here at KAP is dependent on the support of our community. If you are able to make a gift, please consider supporting Ketchikan's kids this summer. You can give online at https://kapalaska.com/unplugged.

No kid in Ketchikan should have to wonder where lunch is coming from this summer. So this year, they won't.

Starting June 8, any school-age kid can get a free, healthy lunch at one of our partner spots around town. No cost and no sign-up. Just walk in and ask for Sunny's lunch.

It runs all summer long, through August 31. You'll find Sunny's Lunches available at Local Grounds (downtown and out at Knudson Cove), plus WF Maddens on Tongass.

Summer break is a long stretch when lunch isn't a sure thing. A good meal and a friendly face can make the whole day lighter for a kid.

Want to help keep these lunches coming all season? You can pitch in at sealevelketchikan.org/sunny. Every gift puts another lunch in the hands of a local kid. 🧡

And a big thank you to the partners powering this one: PeaceHealth Ketchikan Medical Center, Ketchikan Wellness Coalition, Channel Electric, and Resilient Youth & Community, Inc.

KAP was live with First City Forum on KTKN last week! We talked about the dangers of overusing screens ahead of National Internet Safety Month in June and what families can do to help their kids.

Check it out on Spotify or wherever you like to listen to podcasts.

Stay tuned - we’ve been working on a fun project with the kids that we’ll be sharing more about in June!
