The TSS STORY
We’ve come a long way, baby! November of 1999 was the beginning of TSS under the ownership of Renee Schofield. The company had existed prior to that date, under multiple owners and business platforms. Renee purchased the company with a vision of “taking care of people”. The only existing service, at that time, was drug screening. TSS provided random program management as the Third Party Administrator for FOUR companies at the beginning. Renee always talks about those early days and the support from ProMech Air (Mark Easterly), SouthCoast (David Spokely), Taquan Air (Jerry Scudero), Ketchikan Shipyard (Lloyd Gossman). Even the competitor from Anchorage, WorkSafe, (Steve Mihalik & Matt Fagnani) supported TSS with training, advice and a contract for services in SE Alaska. That relationship continues today, even though the company name, ownership and leadership has changed. TSS has grown into its own right as an industry leader. From one 12x12 office to SIX locations (Ketchikan, Juneau, Craig, Alaska, Keokuk, Iowa, Quincy, Illinois and Hannibal, Missouri), TSS services clients across the nation. The company owns real estate in Ketchikan and Keokuk and leases in the other locations.
The expert collection staff services federally mandated employers, non-mandated employers, school districts and families for their drug screening needs. Screening is provided via urine, hair, breath, sweat, and saliva. Other services have also been added: Phlebotomy, Audiogram (screening), DNA Screening/Collection, Background Screening, Fingerprinting, and Ignition Interlock Devices. Most recently we have deployed our Safety Division, which provides risk assessment, training and safety program development to a wide variety of industries. We also plan, host and execute community health fairs. Several of the TSS employees are excellent trainers and speakers regarding policy writing, workplace drug screening, employee education, OSHA education, and so much more. One additional product offering, that we wish was never needed, is our crime & trauma decontamination service. Renee is a trained decontamination specialist and utilizes other staff for support. Most of the work associated with this service is the cleaning and disposal of blood and/or body fluids from a home, car, boat or aircraft. The typical assignment is usually related to extreme trauma and/or death.
The TSS Team also is invested in each community in which they serve. The crew volunteers in various capacities across the nation. They serve on local committees and national boards. They work with kids and seniors, parents and teachers. We are connected to the people that we serve. The TSS Team is dedicated to partnering for the welfare of our communities.
TSS has received numerous awards. Many of the local chambers have recognized and awarded this company with Business of the Year, Entrepreneur of the Year, Outstanding Community Event, and others. The Small Business Administration recognized TSS as the Alaska Small Business of the Year in 2015, an award presented at the White House. Our CEO was also recognized by the Count Me In organization in 2007, the only Alaskan awardee of that program. Renee was also recognized by the Small Business Development Center of Alaska as the Small Business Person on the Year in 2015.
