PowerLight’s CTO Tom Nugent, Jr. welcomed Scott Keeney, CEO of nLIGHT, Inc., as part of an important milestone in our collaboration. During his visit, we had the opportunity to see nLIGHT’s industrial fiber laser seamlessly integrated with our developing transmitter as part of our PTROL-UAS project.
By combining nLIGHT’s high-power laser technology and PowerLight’s cutting-edge wireless power expertise, we’re driving new possibilities for our customers and the industry.
Thank you to Scott and the team at nLIGHT for their dedication, expertise, and shared commitment to excellence. Together, we’re shaping the future of laser power beaming.

A big thank you to all of our project partners who joined us at PowerLight headquarters a few weeks back for our PTROL-UAS kick-off. Representatives from Kraus Hamdani Aerospace, Inc., U. S. Central Command (USCENTCOM), and Georgia Tech Research Institute joined us to discuss progress and next steps for this ground-breaking project to provide on-demand wireless power beaming to drones to extend their range, operational endurance, and payload capacities, while decreasing required ground support and personnel infrastructure. This project is well underway, with our first successful test flights completed in March. Check out footage of our PowerLight receiver successfully integrated and flown on the KHA K1000ULE during our March 11th test flight.

In September PowerLight CTO and co-founder, Tom Nugent, Jr., gave a great webinar presentation all about the basics of power beaming. If you have any questions about the basics of power beaming technology, this is a great resource. Thanks again to National Defense Industrial Association - (NDIA) ETI | Emerging Technologies Institute for hosting us!

On Tuesday October 22nd, PowerLight Technologies' Richard Gustafson, Tom Nugent, Jr., and Mike Hartnett supported our U.S. Central Command partner Doug Brown in presenting our proposal for laser power beaming to Group 2 UAS to the Operational Energy - Innovation's OEPF review board. We have already begun work on the project, PTROL-UAS ("Power Transmitted Over Laser to Unmanned Aerial Systems"), and are excited to see the broadening support and enthusiasm for this capability.
As PowerLight and other industry leaders have developed and set up shop in South King County, leadership in our area understands that new challenges, including infrastructure, work force, and technology, present themselves regularly. Now is the time to convene and discuss how these challenges, and opportunities, can be addressed and leveraged to help the Kent Valley and surrounding areas thrive in our environment. Earlier this week, PowerLight COO, Bob Zak, met with City of Kent, Washington Mayor, Dana Ralph, and other leadership within the air and space manufacturing industry from the Kent Valley to discuss these hurdles and the best approach to addressing them early, and will continue the conversation for the foreseeable future.
Thank you, Mayor Ralph, for setting up this time to discuss next steps for the aerospace manufacturing industry in our area, and keeping our growth top of mind.
Check out PowerLight's website (www.PowerLightTech.com) to learn more about PowerLight and what we do right here in the Kent valley.

Our Story
Since our foundation 10 years ago as LaserMotive, PowerLight has set three world records for beaming power over light, won two NASA government awards and advanced five generations of technology systems. We are the first and only team to develop and viable technology platform that demonstrated transfer of 400 watts over 1 kilometer. Since then we have received validation from industry-leading companies and government labs, and we are globally recognized.
The company’s roots are both in applied science and practical application. One of the founders, Dr. Jordin T. Kare, was an MIT physicist and aerospace engineer known for his research on laser propulsion, and involved in the Clementine lunar mapping mission. His influence on design and the art of the possible, combined with the team’s field trial experience, set the stage for the innovation being brought to market today.
