The alphabets are consonants and long vowels. the short vowels needed by them for word's formation are written as signs above or below each.

The first three short vowels are the fathah (الفتحة), the kasraa (الكسرة)and dammah (الضمة) .

Fathah is a stroke that is placed above a letter while kasraa is placed below a letter an dammah, which looks like a small waw, is placed above a letter.

Fathah is pronounced as a short "a" as in 'cat', while kasraa is pronounced as a short "i" as in 'bit' and dammah is pronounced as a short "u" as in 'put'.

SHORT VOWELS

Does it matter?

Well, in this post you may see one word with three vowels but it’s actually three words:

حـَب Hab: seed, cereal, or loved, liked (in the past tense).
حـِب Heb: love, like (as an order).
حـُب hob: love,like (itself).

Vowels can change the meaning sometimes, and vowels are the reason why we write some words differently (in English) like: mn ayn? men ayna.
