Serving people impacted by trauma, addiction and incarceration through trauma-sensitive, mindfulness-based yoga. Many will recidivate within a year of release.

Background:
Founded by Michael Huggins in 2012, Transformation Yoga Project (TYP) began as an extension of the volunteer work done as an individual contributor to bring the benefits of yoga and mindfulness to at risk populations. The program’s purpose at that time was to provide helpful tools through the practice of yoga for dealing with stress, tension, addiction, and anxiety for people who woul

Last year TYP join forces with https://www.facebook.com/DefyVentures to start the PA Chapter to address the social problems of mass incarceration and recidivism by providing training programs to individuals with criminal histories, which improve their well-being, facilitate employment, and promoting personal development. Please follow Defy Ventures as we discontinue this page.

Defy Ventures PA 2024 Year-End Appeal 11/11/2024

Dear friends, I rarely ask you for help but the Defy Ventures PA chapter could sure use your support. In its 1 ½ years of existence the PA chapter has done impactful work to significantly reduce recidivism rates through our nationally recognized prison-based entrepreneurship program. After a 6-month intensive program we recently graduated our first class at the Philadelphia Industrial Correctional Center. A new program recently started at SCI Chester. These in prison programs are in addition to our entrepreneurship bootcamp for returning citizens. We need your support to continue to maintain and grow these programs. While the state's recidivism rate hovers at 60%, only 10% of Defy's graduates return to prison.

We are grateful for our involvement with the start up of Defy Ventures PA chapter Defy Ventures as we returned to PICC (Philadelphia Industrial Correctional Center) with over 20 outside volunteers to support job development and grounding skills for the inside students. This is the first of many inside programs to be implemented within Pennsylvania. Several TYP instructor's were part of the outside team of volunteers.

🥁 DRUM ROLL PLEASE 🥁

We couldn't be more excited or proud to announce our transition to Defy Ventures. People serving time in prison often have limited resources to help them build positive plans for their future and prepare them for life on the outside, but Transformation Yoga Project and Defy Ventures work to fill this gap.

After 10 years of service, will no longer formally operate, though TYP Founder Michael Huggins and volunteers will continue yoga classes at several prisons and continue community yoga trainings in the greater Philadelphia area. “Defy Ventures shares many of the same values as Transformation Yoga Project, and I am excited to enter this new phase in promoting and expanding access to justice work by committing our resources toward the launch of this chapter," says Mike.

We'll be sharing more information about this transition on our website and here on social media in the coming days. Stay tuned. 🙏🥳

As we look back at the last decade of service, we’re especially proud of our post-Covid pivot that empowered inside instructors, saw the resuming of in-person trainings and prison programming, and our support of like minded organizations.

We’ve used our social media and many podcast guest opportunities to highlight an array of impressive organizations we've partnered with, bringing visibility to the efforts of many. Since 2021 alone, we’ve given away over $300,000 to support trauma service and yoga organizations. We’ve also donated 1,200 of our books: “Yoga For Recovery, A Practical Guide for Healing” and “Going Om: A CEO’s Self Discovery Behind Bars.”

We are eternally grateful for your support. Over the next few months, you will hear about our biggest change: a way that TYP will facilitate the establishment of an entirely new trauma-informed program serving people impacted by the justice system in . Stay tuned!
