We commend and thank Transformation Yoga Project and Michael Huggins for their work since 2013 making trauma-informed yoga, mindfulness, and training more accessible to communities impacted by trauma, recovery, and incarceration.

As the organization moves towards concluding in-person operations by the middle of 2022, it is releasing 100% of its financial reserves to a mix of national and local organizations that can use the resources to further the vision of TYP in a meaningful way.

Transformation Yoga Project Returns to SCI Chester - Transformation Yoga Project

News stories have abounded about rampant injustice in the prison system during the #pandemic, including extended lockdowns, solitary confinement, and inadequate access to PPE.

The #traumasensitiveyoga and #mindfulness programs offered by TYP are needed now more than ever.

That’s why we’re grateful for the opportunity to resume serving the incarcerated men of SCI Chester in Chester, PA. To read more about this emotional return, click the link below, and thank you for your support! 🙏🙌

Transformation Yoga Project Returns to SCI Chester - Transformation Yoga Project Transformation Yoga Project programming returned to Chester State Correctional Institute in Pennsylvania as biweekly classes resume after a 20-month due to Covid-19 restrictions.

𝓢𝓸𝓶𝓮 𝓮𝔁𝓬𝓲𝓽𝓲𝓷𝓰 𝓷𝓮𝔀𝓼! As we’ve adjusted to life in the wake — and throes — of Covid-19 our team has realized that we still have work to do. Rather than shuttering at the end of next year, we are instead now focused on recalibration of how and where we may be of service 🙌

We have found great joy and satisfaction in working with the organizations we’ve met during this journey, and will continue to provide mentorship and programming for their teams as they attend to their communities. We are also working to re-enter the justice space in order to provide trauma-sensitive yoga and meditation for incarcerated people in the Greater Philadelphia area.

Onward! Check out our website to join us and learn more, and thank you for your support!

Though he had practiced yoga since 2004, when TYP founder Mike Huggins went to prison on a white collar misdemeanor for nine months, his practice took on a whole new significance. It gave him a mindset to endure prison life, and opened his eyes to not only the #injustices of the prison system, but of the lack of accessibility of #yoga and #mindfulness programs for folks in prison, and particularly for people of color.

After his release, Mike made it his life's work to bring trauma-sensitive yoga programming to this underserved population. Though the organization has evolved since then, justice work is TYP's initial vision and value. Learn more and get involved at our website → transformationyogaproject.org

Informative article from Lawrence Bartley & the Marshall Project: Words like “inmate,” “prisoner,” “convict,” “felon” and “offender” are like brands. They reduce human beings to their crimes and cages......Stigmas tend to use even the kindest among us as their unwitting weapons.

Our Story

Background:
Founded by Michael Huggins in 2012, Transformation Yoga Project (TYP) began as an extension of the volunteer work done as an individual contributor to bring the benefits of yoga and mindfulness to at risk populations. The program’s purpose at that time was to provide helpful tools through the practice of yoga for dealing with stress, tension, addiction, and anxiety for people who would otherwise not have access to yoga. These volunteer activities began in 2009 and over time have grown to include developing programming for adults who are incarcerated, veterans, in drug and alcohol recovery or are accessing community transitional services.

Mission:

Transformation Yoga Project serves people impacted by trauma, addiction, and incarceration through trauma-sensitive, mindfulness-based yoga. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit funded through a combination of program fees, grants and donations.

We believe yoga creates and supports positive change from the inside-out for all individuals. We recognize there are vast numbers of people who do not have access to this practice, which has many benefits including: stress management, self-awareness, impulse control, mindfulness, and distress tolerance. We believe the health of any community is dependent on the health of all of its members. Transformation Yoga Project implements its compassionate mission by providing yoga support services through teachers specifically trained in mindfulness based yoga for this population.

In addition, Transformation Yoga Project offers training workshops and other activities for those involved in, or who want to become involved in, teaching yoga and mindfulness to those at-risk. We want to assist in raising awareness and the level of service activity in greater Philadelphia community.
