I’m always fascinated by ghost signs. Their nearly illegible clues hint at earlier, more promising times. These are in Ménerbes and Vaugines.
The carved wall is a tombstone dating back to 1254 in the cloister of Abbaye Saint-Hilaire. The incised sun dial in Ménerbes has this foreboding message in Latin: ‘ultima forsan’ - perhaps the last. Both are ghost signs in their own ways.
