Pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ living in Mozambique.
Bishop Osório Citora of Quelimane, Mozambique, was found dead in the early hours of June 6 inside the episcopal residence, in what authorities are treating as a suspected act of brutal murder. According to Aid to the Church in Need, the 54-year-old Consolata missionary was discovered in a corridor of the residence with a gunshot wound to the chest near the heart. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, and the identity of the attacker is still unknown. Archbishop Inácio Saure of Nampula, president of Mozambique’s bishops’ conference, confirmed that the bishop was found “lifeless and in strange circumstances that have yet to be clarified,” underscoring the uncertainty surrounding the case. At this stage, investigators have released few details, and the motive for the attack has not been established. The Presidency of Mozambique issued a statement expressing “deep sorrow and consternation” at the killing. President Daniel Chapo described Bishop Osório’s death as an “irreparable loss” for both the nation and the Catholic community, highlighting his lifelong dedication to humility, pastoral service, and the promotion of peace and reconciliation. The killing comes at a time of continued instability in parts of Mozambique, particularly in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, where armed groups have carried out repeated attacks on civilians and religious infrastructure. Recent incidents have included the destruction of churches, mission buildings, and schools, and further straining already vulnerable communities. Mozambique remains a focus of international Catholic humanitarian concern, with organizations such as Aid to the Church in Need supporting local pastoral and social reconstruction efforts. The tragedy adds to the challenges facing the Church in the country, which continues to operate amid insecurity and sporadic violence across several regions.
