Farm succession planning can be more complex than other business succession because it involves not only the business, but the land and often other assets, like a family home. Transitioning to the next operator can include transferring ownership, as well as skills, knowledge, and management roles.

In this article, farmers share the challenges of succession planning.

The Capital Equipment Assistance Program (CEAP) is a competitive grant program from the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets. This program funds up to 90% of the purchasing cost of field equipment for water quality improvements on farms. For example, the program often funds equipment for cover cropping, conservation tillage, or innovative manure or wastewater management.

It's National Dairy Month ๐Ÿฎ Meet our friends at Grace Pond Farm!

Rhiannon and Gregg are the duo behind this thriving pastured livestock and organic dairy farm based in Thomaston, Maine. In 2018, they took on the incredible task of reviving an 80-acre property that had sat largely unused for decades. Since then, theyโ€™ve built their infrastructure from the ground up, growing a herd of 30 dairy cows and establishing a truly integrated ecosystem.

Rotational Grazing: Their cows, broiler chickens, pigs, and turkeys work together in a multi-species system that maximizes pasture value.

Soil Health: Every animal plays a role in enhancing soil fertility and land health.

Community First: For Rhiannon and Gregg, the farm is more than a business โ€” itโ€™s a cornerstone of the local community.

Stewardship: Their ultimate goal? To leave the land even better than they found it. ๐ŸŒŽโœจ
