Greetings,
I run into homes all the time that have the wrong locks on the doors because someone went out and bought something that was pretty and never thought about the keyway. So, now they have two different keys, sometimes just for entering their home!
Recommendation: Homeowners should figure out what brand of lock is on their doors. A brand name is usually located on the edge of the door at the latch or bolt. Or, look on the keys for letters or numbers, such as KW1 or SC1. They can take this information to a hardware store and the salesperson can then tell them what to buy. Of course, they can also call a locksmith. I would be happy to help and have been doing retail and light commercial locksmithing in the Houston-Katy area since 2003.

I get calls telling me they cannot get their key either in or out of the lock. They think there is something wrong with the lock itself , but what is happening most of the time is that the pins are dry and need lubrication. I use a product called Tri Flow which has Teflon in it. There are other brands that have Teflon and that is what I recommend. However trusty WD-40 is good to get you out of a jam. Just spray a little in the key hole or on each side of the key if stuck in the lock and jiggle (technical term) the key and walla out it comes.
If you want to add hardware to your house but don't want to replace and the keyed locks be sure you purchase the same Keyway. By that I mean take your house key with you to store and ask clerk to direct you to the same hardware that uses that keyway or key. They might even pin it up for you while you are in the store. They can only do it at time of purchase. You cannot take back to store for pinning once you have left with it. Unless they have changed the Law. Ok, good hardware hunting.
Correction! Angle slightly to the outside of the house. Must have been standing on my head. Ha Ha!
A security tip. Replace your short screws in the strike plate for your Dead Bolt with 3" ones. Angle them slightly toward the inside of the house so they go into the 2X4 and not just the frame around the door. If someone tries to kick in the door it will make them work for it.
