"Do what you feel in your heart to be right, for you'll be criticized anyway." -- Eleanor Roosevelt

This prominent diplomat, author, civil rights activist and the longest serving First Lady in US history was born on this day in 1884. One of the most respected and beloved women of the twentieth century, Eleanor Roosevelt also co-founded Freedom House in the 1940s and founded the UN Association of the US in 1943 to advance support for the UN’s formation.

In 1945, she was appointed to serve as a US delegate to the UN and chaired the committee that drafted and approved the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It’s especially fitting that the International Day of the Girl falls on Roosevelt’s birthday as she was involved in women’s issues throughout her life. Until her death in 1962, she chaired the Presidential Commission on the Status of Women, the Kennedy Administration's groundbreaking committee whose report on the status of American women is credited with helping ignite the start of second-wave feminism.

To introduce children to Eleanor Roosevelt's incredible life and legacy, we recommend "Eleanor, Quiet No More" (https://www.amightygirl.com/eleanor-quiet-no-more) and "Amelia and Eleanor Go For A Ride" about Roosevelt's friendship with Amelia Earhart (https://www.amightygirl.com/amelia-and-eleanor-go-for-a-ride) -- both for readers 5 and up.

There is also an excellent Newbery Honor book "Eleanor Roosevelt: A Life of Discovery" for ages 8 and up (https://www.amightygirl.com/eleanor-roosevelt-a-life-of-discovery) and "Eleanor Roosevelt, Fighter For Justice" for ages 10 and up (https://www.amightygirl.com/eleanor-roosevelt-fighter-for-justice)

Eleanor Roosevelt is also the author of a wonderful book for kids about citizenship, democracy, and the importance of voting: "When You Grow Up to Vote: How Our Government Works for You" for ages 7 to 12 at https://www.amightygirl.com/when-you-grow-up-to-vote

For adult readers, we recommend Eleanor Roosevelt's excellent autobiography (https://www.amightygirl.com/the-autobiography-of-eleanor-roosevelt) and the exceptional biography "Eleanor" (https://www.amightygirl.com/eleanor)

After keeping Pain locked away for many years, she decided to bury it in a shallow grave…not knowing how easily it could resurface after a storm.

For awhile, her tears weren’t enough to cause a flood…but then…the inevitable comedown after her limerant object fell from grace.

…like waves crashing on a shoreline, her cries clawed at the earth…exposing Pain she never expected to see again.

She tried to hide behind her closed lids, settling deep into the darkness but eventually she opened her eyes…and there, staring back at her… beaten and broken was Pain…and it looked like her.

She took Pain - the battered version of herself - into her arms and spoke words of gratitude and love…and then, for the first time in this life, she let Pain go…and realized she could finally breathe.
